It was not the intention to pit this website/message board against the PTA Board at all. Working together to reach out to more of the parent community would be mutually beneficial for all of us. The good thing about the PTA is that anyone can join and help out. No doubt, it is a lot of work, and doubly so if you are a Board member. We do commend you for your volunteering and willingness to take the responsibility of holding a PTA position.

Many items which are requested from PTA come up quickly and there isn't time to have a General Meeting. While it would be ideal to have the membership vote on everything, under the circumstances it is not realistic. That is unless we have people out there that are willing to come forward and plan, orgranize and implement each of the meetings. Even then it is not always time effective.

What is terrific about the PTA is that there is help available from other PTA groups and the state and national chapters. We have researched ways to get help from the Nevada State PTA. They will send someone out to help us run our general meetings and help us with our budget. All we have to do is contact them, the question is would we be willing to do so? It's a viable solution to taking some of the load off of overworked PTA members, and maybe after this we would get different parents volunteering and joining the PTA. It's free, it's easy, and it's available.

Along those same lines, there is a national program, "Building Successful Partnerships" that can be brought to our school for no charge. It is through the National PTA and is to implement the National Standards for Parent/Family Involvement Programs. There is a person at the state office right here in Las Vegas who can come to our school and help us get on the right track. All we need is the principal to call. If you're interested in bringing this program to our school, please either send an email to us or to the principal at sleibowitz@interact.ccsd.net and let her know we would like this program.

Escrip: We don't have the resources to make 1000+ copies at this website, but if you log on to Escrip.com, there is a section that has marketing techniques and ready-made flyers to hand out in the Beatty folders? We can download them for you, if you don't have time, and email it to you. We just can't copy them and distribute.

PTA is not made up only of the board. However, with few exceptions, a large portion of the work does have to be done by the board. You would be surprised at the small response to our requests for help. It is usually the same few people. Also, even when people respond, when we call them for the actual help, we do not get a lot of help. Thank you to all who do help, you are all greatly appreciated

Again, the more parents we can reach through any venue, the better response we will get. We completely believe that if the PTA started having general monthly meetings that all members were invited to and can raise issues and vote, the lines of communication would be opened and more people would volunteer. It may be optimistic on our part, but we've got to start somewhere!

Thank you for posting some answers and we look forward to future discussions. Feel free to use this board if you need volunteers for events. Take Mom to School Day comes to mind.

Regarding Beatty being the best education... we'll leave that discussion for another day. :)
