Subject: The percentage of blacks in New Orleans
In reply to: Chuck in ND 's message, "That's exactly what I was thinking." on 14:49:30 09/01/05 Thu

The city of New Orleans is just over 60% black. That's where most of the images are coming from... the city. But, of course, quite a bit more than 60% are black. I think you are right about the wealth/transportation thing, although I don't think that is enough reason to explain the extremely high percentage... must be something else, I'd think!

There is also something else to maybe consider that is also related to the 'wealth' explanation. I remember hearing about Katrina just one time before it ripped through. I had heard that it existed and that it had winds of 65 mph... 10 short of a hurricane. Next thing I hear, its that thousands may be dead. I rarely listen to the radio and almost never watch tv. I read news online often, but not usually about stuff involving hurricanes... Its possible they just didn't get the word on how bad it was going to be, since I didn't....... Why?

I really hope this doesn't sound out of place or uncalled-for... but I think its true. Blacks tend to group together. If a black person walks into a room of mostly white people, he/she is much more likely to gravitate towards another black person. The same thing goes for whites as well. But look at the Superdome scenes... all black. That is a place where blacks gather. I'm sure there are places where whites are gathering as well. A white person may not want to be at the superdome BECAUSE its all black. A black person might not want to be somewhere that is all white. And, since the majority of the population in New Orleans is black, it makes sense that the biggest building ( hence, the biggest story ), would be all black. Does that make sense? LOL. I hope so.
