Hi Jerry, you don't mention how long you've had this poor sweet baby or his age, however, my guess is that you are the first thing he's ever had that even remotely resembled human companionship and compassion. Give him time, he will come around. As for playing, that will come in time too. You have to keep reminding yourself of what his former life consisted of, i.e., sitting in a cage all day long with little to no human interactions, so you have opened up an entire new world to this dog. Just keep working with him, expose him to as many new, fun & exciting things as possible (without any undue stress) and I'll bet you within 6 months (or less) you'll see an entirely new dog before you. There is no set timetable for the length of time it takes for a rescued dog to come around, it is as individual as the dog itself and depends greatly on how long & the living conditions they were subjected to prior to coming into rescue/adoption.
