I chose Transmonde because they seemed to offer a high bang/buck ratio. Given the low price, I guess it would be sort of a miracle if quality and support turned out to be way above average. In fact I suspect they were not above average. If I had it to do over again, I guess I would bite the bullet and pay more.

On the positive side:
. Transmonde offered and delivered a highly configurable system. I am happy that I was able to choose the features I preferred... 10mb hard drive, Celeron 300, etc.
. Fabulous screen
. Comfortable keyboard

On the negative side, DEFECTS AND SUPPORT ISSUES:
. I have yet to see it operate using battery power. I have always had to have it plugged into the wall current.
. Tech support took seven weeks to respond by email! Thus they contributed to using up my 30-day return period.
. I have not been able to get the LS120 drive to work. (Maybe I just need to install drivers; I should look into it, but the battery problem has taken priority).
. Now with ASE, you might not get any tech support if you can't find your invoice.

On the negative side, PERFORMANCE ISSUES:
. DVD video quality is dismal. Pixelation like crazy makes for jagged images. May be due to low amount of video RAM.
. Below-average benchmarks on video (for details, browse to www.zdnet.com, search for "Transmonde").
. Below-average benchmarks for hard drive (ibid).
. Tinny built-in speakers. (Of course, good external speakers are available.)

Overall, not stellar.

FWIW I think Transmonde and ASE deserve praise for trying to offer a good system at an attractive price point. Still I have to suspect that defects and performance issues, as well as competition and the rush to market, must have contributed to the company's failure.

Possibly I might hope to get my system to behave acceptably, but it's going to require help & answered prayers!
