Neither of us were at the Battle of Lake Erie in 1813, so whatever the Niagra reported to General Harrison might not be true. It might have been code for, "We kicked the living sh*t out of the Redcoats!"

As far as Cronauer befriending a VC terrorist, well that is about as flimsy as the plot device on McHale's Navy
when the crew of a US PT Boat befriended "Fuji," a Jap who supposedly befriended Americans. That was NBC trying to play Americans for suckers. In real life during WWII, any Jap we captured on a PT Boat (and I know this from my buddies who served PT duty in the South Pacific), was thrown down under the stern so that the props would slice him up. The Japs did the same thing to our boys.

I remember before I was transferred to Germany in January, 1945, I was on duty in the South Pacific as an intelligence officer and military disciplinarian. I would often use harsh measures on miscreants on both sides of the conflict.
