Mary, a lot of your memories echo mine since I was there for many of them, LOL.
The Absolute Rollerfest in Bay City has to be one of the best memories for me. "Meeting" Cathy online, finding out we only lived a stone's throw away from each other, getting to know her and deciding to do a 'fest in our home state -- all the planning and excitement (not to mention the frustration,) that went into getting ready to give you guys a party you'd never forget and then seeing it come to life was something I could never forget.
Realizing too late that $35 a head was not enough to cover the cost of having the 'fest AND getting a Roller there at the same time. Then having Nicki and Kathy step up and gather donations to get Ian there...that was out of this world. I couldn't believe he was actually there. And he was so great to all of us. Having Ian plant a big wet one on me when I met him...I wasn't expecting that! LOL. Having him there with us was the first chance (but not the last) I ever had to talk face to face with a Roller. I'll never forget what joy he brought us that weekend!!
Making plans to go to Vegas the next year and not having to do any of the planning was such a relief, but being the first time I'd ever flown, it was a bit scary and exciting all at the same time. Lucky for me I had two great travel companions and roomies (Cathy and msMary.) The surprise of having Nobby Clark show up at the 'fest was a trip, and getting to meet Pat was pretty cool too. The Sammy Haggar concert WAS fun!! Even if we did have to leave before it ended, it was a perfect way to end the weekend, (even if we did have to endure the "flight from hell" to get home, LOL!!) The heat in Vegas (now that I think about it, it was pretty darn hot and steamy in New Orleans and Philly too!)...something else I'll never forget! Not being able to go out and explore 'til the sun went down and it cooled off to 95 degrees or so, ha! The tour Julz and Michelle set up for us in New Orleans on the bus...singing all the way back to the bus and running into the guys in the kilts, LOL. Having Ian show up onstage with Duncan, and then having him say my name while he was onstage (I was a little embarrassed at the time, though, and I had to yell at him for forgetting to mention my 'fest partner, Cathy, LOL.) Getting invited by Duncan to eat dinner with him and his gang at Denny's, pushing everyone out onto the dance floor at Tipitina's when they were reluctant to go out there. Mine and Cathy's road trip to Philly the next year, even though our pal Mary couldn't go :-( (we missed you, Mary!) Having the fire alarm go off during the "Dedication" concert in Philly and thinking "hey those are some cool sound effects!" Staying up all night in somebody's room drinking champagne 'til I couldn't see straight...hmmm...which trip was that again? Oh, all of them!!
And of course Les's concert in Chicago was a load of fun with 6 of us on a road trip, packed into one hotel room and lord knows how many of us in the cab. Waiting for the cab to show up to take us back to the hotel and wondering if we were going to have to walk.
All the great music on all the trips we took - whether it was one of the Rollers performing, or a tribute band, or just some great tapes in the car...always fun, never boring, fond memories to last a life time!!!
There was always some kind of controversy or another going on, for some reason there was always someone out to spoil the fun, which I could never quite understand. I was always so happy to get a chance to get away from my REAL life for a while and just have fun with friends and good music, and sometimes even get the chance to meet a Roller or two. But none of that even matters now. Everything I have taken away from the experience is good...really great times with great friends and wonderful music, pictures, video and fabulous memories to last me a lifetime!!!!
