Hi:

I have very little BB experience, have only owned one BB, my current 19 month old male, but have owned 3 rotties at different times. I find him to need less activity than the rotties, and he is probably more eager to please. He is way more reactive and suspicious than the rotties though, and when he goes off is way more of a handful. In many ways he was a much easier puppy to raise, calm and non-destructive in the house, but the temperament is much more difficult. We worked harder with his socialization and training than any of my rotts (who were safe and friendly with introduced strangers) but he is a nightmare with anyone outside the immediate family. If you looked at his pedigree, you would see lots of famous SA kennels listed...but that is no guarantee of a good boerboel with a solid, stable temperament. Comparing rotts and BB's with health issues: no comparison. My poor boy has had more vet bills than the three rottweilers combined! If I had it to do over, I'd make sure that I got my dog from someone who didn't keep generations of BB's kenneled 24/7 and used them as in income stream. Find a breeder who lives with their dogs, plays with their dogs, maybe works with their dogs, and who either health tests or in the case of working dogs, discovers through actual life experience which dogs are healthy longterm...then you'll hopefully get a good boerboel!
