Subject: The Columbia aftermath

Interesting comments in the thread below. Makes one think.

NASA's fault? I sure hope not. A Federal agency trying to do its mission with limited funding, like all other Federal agencies except Defense.

Did complacency and routine have a role? Probably.

But what about the staffers who analyzed the takeoff incident and concluded it wasn't a safety hazard? Imagine how they must feel now. My heart goes out to them just as much.

Its easy to overlook the real extent of our loss. Its not apparent to many just what an outstanding scholar and achiever one must be to get selected to go into space. We lost alot of talent and skill, not to mention some truly great human beings.

NASA or some modification of it will survive. First because the Military has too much of an interest in space to allow the program to end. Thats what saved NASA after Challenger, don't kid yourselves. Secondly, there is still the mystique, and human desire to explore.

Like alot of other things, its needs fixing. We're way behind where we should be by now.
