At uni I used to go to the gym 1-2x week, do circuits 1-2 x Week, swim 1-2x Week. Of course it was all free and I could fit my work round my dancing.... I was fit & skinny then!! I also walked up and down a steep hill most days.

Working/travelling really cuts down my time available now but I try and make the gym 2-3x week at lunchtime. My work out varies, depending on what I'm doing in the evening. I concentrate on either cardio & stretching or weights/strength training as I don't have time to do everything, with the very occasional swim.

Dancing a lot will help your stamina, but it's not as tough as a circuit class depending on how hard you push yourself, sometimes I wonder whether people are actually trying!

For warm up, I stretch gently and we always start with a gentle waltz before going full out. At Cheam they always play rumbas first for the same reason for latin. If your choreography involves splits, kick, backbends etc, make sure you stretch these areas. There are many you can do and it's best to get someone who knows that they're talking about to show you if you don't know any.

Try and get to practise early and spend 5-10mins beforehand
rather then waiting to start.

Yoga & Pilates are good for core strength, but I don't have the time, and frankly I've found every yoga class I've been to boring, I've tried a few different teachers. I'm so unspiritual!

If you have exercise videos/dvds these can be good if you have space to do them. I have the New York State ballet workout which looks good if I ever get round to doing it, it's less cardio but a lot of leg & core strengthening exercises. I also love Tae Bo, (sort of non contact kick boxing) but haven't done that for ages since moving, good for stamina, strength and flexibiliy. You need to find something you enjoy doing or you won't stick to it and feel guilty.

Another thing which is a great workout is getting in and out of wetsuits and a long surface swim with all your scuba gear on + a pony. Can't wait to do it again, 6 weeks & counting :)
