Thanks to Sue, we now have official-looking photos of Mr. Kuentz and Mr. Briggs along with Mr. Lewis.

Now we need captions for one, two, or all three beloved band directors.

Was there a nickname or favorite phrase or something that characterized these gentlemen? Post your suggestions here-- the winner gets glory and fame!

Robin,
Dad's nickname was "Big Daddy". A name that he acquired from his "crossing over" from being a teacher-friend-parent figure to many of his students. This nickname was also his CB callsign (rememember those days) when they were popular.

Another phrase we used to say after every practice, game, band gathering was this: Drum Major: "Band dismissed!"
Band: "Get It!"

Cool!

I do (sadly) remember the CB days; but my CB was a life-saver on one cross-country trip I made. I still have vivid memories of some of the people I talked to at 3:00 in the morning.

Robin, you just reminded me of a bit o' CB/music trivia that I only recently learned -- that Chip Davis (Mannheim Steamroller) co-wrote "Convoy" (argh!) which helped kickstart the whole CB radio craze. He was working at an ad agency writing jingles, and the song/character grew out of a popular ad he created. Therefore, in a roundabout way, you can thank him for your fond CB memories, if not for that song.......

I have to agree that Big Daddy is the way to go for Mr. Kuentz. We even gave him a hat that said that. I will never forget how he challenged us to be the best we could yet, still treated us with respect. Susan

Les, far be it for me to challenge your memories. But I happen to recollect calling Mr. Briggs "Uncle Lowell", especially when we turned the Mickey Mouse Song into "D-A-D-D-Y K-U-E-N-T-Z" and we'd answer "Daddy Kuentz" with "Uncle Lowell"

Yet another memory challenge....
I believe we called Mr Lewis "Uncle Bob", Mr Briggs "Cousin Lowell, and Mr Kuentz was then, and will always be "Big Daddy"

Yes, Mike, you're right on that one. Mr. Lewis WAS always "Uncle Bob", at least during my four years in band.

Remember when we would struggle out on the field and Dad would holler at us from his tower and ask us "Where is your pride...in your back pocket"?
To this day he still has that effect over me and I'm over 40 now.

Okay, Kim gets the glory for "Big Daddy" since she was the first one in with it. Les gets the recognition for "Big Fig" for Mr. Briggs; although I hesitate to ask why that original name was bestowed (and "Uncle Loel" does roll off the tongue nicely).

And thanks to everybody who posted their suggestions! Be sure to check the website regularly for new photos, survey questions, and polls.

Did you know that NISD named a school after Mr. Lewis?
