I'm here in SA from northern Alabama. My dad, Rev. Dr. Paul Perry, who incidentally gave the invocation at MANY a Ram football and basketball game, passed away. I was given a box by my mom over the weekend. Besides the excitement of the 1976-77 band's panoramic photo and a montage of photos of me winning a Leon Valley pageant that ended up having me ride a float in Battle of Flowers, et. al., parades that year rather than marching with THE PRIDE, I had a gem put back in my hands: the December 1976 issue of the magazine put out by the CofC, "San Antonio Magazine." The cover article was written by Mary Fallon, and not only did she interview the directors and some of our fellow musicians, but also some non-band students, administrators, and faculty who bragged and bragged about us as PEOPLE and members of a cohesive organization.
I am going to get the entire article typed up. You guys are going to be very, very touched.

But one more thing: I have a particular "take" on the thrust of this article, and I would like to challenge you all to read the article, see my summation (which has to do with generational changes in discipline, respect, families, and parenting of adolescents). Then, let's get a roaring debate, ok? I'll find out exactly how best to set it up in the system so the article is easy to access and then comments can be created right away after reading the article.

I am converting the original reel to reel recordings of the JMHS band; 1976 UIL Concert contest is completed, and I am now working on 78, 79, and 80 UIL Concert contest, and the 1981 UTA Six Flags concert contest recording. With the exception of the 1980 recording, all are in surprisingly great shape, however the 1980 recording hasn't fared so well. It is still convertible, but the audio quality is very diminished. If you are interested in having one of these cd's, find me on facebook and leave me a message!

Subject: Charles Kuentz nomination for elementary school name

Dear Ram Band Friends and Family,

In the coming months, Northside School District will be naming two of their new elementary schools opening in the far northwest area. They are requesting name nominations from the public and I would like to nominate my dad, Charles L. Kuentz. He taught for a total of 31 years, and for NISD from 1975 to 1992. I would like to ask your help in submitting nomination letters to NISD. If you would like to do this, please go to their website at www.NISD.net and continue with the link to name their new schools. You can do this electronically or through the post office. It is extremely important to submit your nomination letter to NISD by next Friday, January 11.

It was very touching to read some of the postings that were on the discussion board about my Dad on the RamBand website. I know that he would be greatly moved, humbled and honored by your nomination for this tribute.

Thank you for your time and submission,

Kim Kuentz Melchert
Class of '80
steve.melchert@gmail.com

Note: here is Mr. Kuentz’s address for your nomination:

Charles L. Kuentz, Jr.
403 Oak Country
Helotes, Texas 78023
(830) 510-4974
CJBaronTex@aol.com

Kim asked me for help getting this message out to everyone as soon as possible. I’m using addresses from March of 2003, so if you could help by sending me any updates you know of, we would appreciate it.

Thanks!

Robin

Dear Former Students:
It was great seeing those of you who attended the Reunion in June. My thanks to Mark Stephens for putting it together. I really am blessed to have had such beautiful children to teach and who later grew to be such wonderful adults.

In the event that some of you might want to get your horns back and and blow the "Tournament of Roses" dust off, I would be honored to have you consider joining the Helotes Area Community Band which I am conducting. You do not have to be a resident of Helotes to be a member of this band. We have people coming from all over the area. The band started out with 7 members and now we're up to almost 50. We currently play some of the same music we did at Marshall plus some really good marches.

We currently rehearse every Monday night 7-9pm at the First Baptist Church in Helotes.

Every third Friday night, the band plays for the Helotes Community Movie Night. This is an outdoor, family oriented event where people bring lawn chairs, coolers, blankets, etc. and listen to the band play prior to the movie. Everyone enjoys it, especially the kids! This event is held on the grounds of the Helotes City Hall, which by the way, was formerly my grandfather's farm!

I would love seeing some of you. If you have any questions, my email address is : cjbarontex@yahoo.com and my phone # is 210-275-7152.

Hope to hear from you!

Mr. K.

Mark Stephens is working on a June 2009 reunion for band members from around the 70s. You remember those days, right? If you visit the new blog and log in, you can post your own stuff, including photos, and comment on others' posts. It's at marshallramband.blogspot DOT com. If you don't already have an account, just e-mail me and I'll send you the link.

Please let other band members know about the reunion and have them get in touch with Mark at stephens.m.a@centurytel DOT net.

You can contact either of us if you have e-mail addresses or phone numbers that have changed in the last 6 years so we can update our records.

See you this summer!

Many of us former Ramband members auditioned for, and actually played in several college marching bands, college symphonic bands, college jazz bands, and/or orchestras. I know many Ramband members participated in the UTSA, SWTSU, University of Texas, University of Houston, and Baylor bands. I think it would be awesome if we could compile a list of the college bands that we all joined.

Well it's official! There will be an Elementary School on Leslie Road in Helotes (my dad's grandparent's property) that will be named Charles L. Kuentz Elementary. It's awesome to think of it. Thank you soo much for your recommendation for my dad!! If you know of anyone who submitted their thoughts/recommendation, would you please pass this news on.

Thanks again, and God's blessings to you and yours...

Was just curious....
Would anyone be interested in doing another reunion sometime soon?
As successful and as fun as the last one was, is there anyone else out there that could use the "infusion"?
I know I could, pushin 50 and feeling rather old...

Anyone besides me still unable to rid their brains of certain sights, sounds, or otherwise from their days as a Ram Bander?
For me, it was the 1976-77 drum cadence that we used for both the field and parades. Maybe we utilized it the year before, too? Percussionsists, help me here??? When I have problems going to sleep, I'll be damned if that sound pattern doesn't slip back into my mind. I KNOW..... must have run out of my valium or something, right?

Just wanted to let all know James Sanders, who many knew as Jamie, younger brother of Jon Sanders passed away after a long illness,a brain tumor that was inoperable.
Funeral service was held in California, where he has been living with his wife and kids.
Just a thought, but it might be nice to share any memories about him from school here.......

HAs anyone ever heard of a HANG drum? They are made in Sweden or Belgium and IMPOSSIBLE to find/order/purchase. It is pronounced HUNG, but spelled HANG. I have googled all over the place and found they are at least $1500, but none are available and backorder is years away. If anyone wants to hear one, youtube (youtube and google are now VERBS! LOL) HANG DRUM... they are amazing and something I eventually will HAVE to have. Just thought all you drummers and musicians would be interested in something relatively new, and today was the first day I heard one on the web and was amazed.

Anybody had any experience with these folks?

I'm glad to see that there are many who keep alive the good ole days of ... so long ago. But something of the past is missing and I think we must take up an earnest search to once again locate that which has been lost. Please help if you can. Let's all band together once again to locate Randy's hair!
