What I Learned From Being In Band,
From Elementary School Through College.

By Debbie Teal

1. Even though I really wanted to play French horn, it's a whole lot easier hauling a flute back and forth on the school bus every day.

2. Hard work and endless hours of practice learning to play arpeggios flawlessly in any key for an audition to get into band as a freshman actually pays off.

3. The ability to play arpeggios note-perfect in any key is of little use as a career skill when you major in English in college. It just means you know what an "arpeggio" is and how to spell it.

4. When enjoying end-of-summer-band swimming parties, never let upperclassmen write amusing slogans on your skin in lipstick as part of your initiation, especially if you have fair skin. Not unless you want to spend the first week of school walking around with the words "Hi, I'm a freshman" standing out in stark relief to your sunburn.

5. Marching practice before school and looking stylish during school are mutually exclusive concepts. By the end of a hot, humid rehearsal, makeup will end up several inches lower than originally applied. Hair optimistically curled beforehand will be straight by the end of first period. And just as that "eau de sneaker" smell is starting to wear off, it will be time for band and more marching.

6. No matter what style or design, flute lyres do not, I repeat, DO NOT work. Memorizing every single note of every single song or at least faking it convincingly are your only options on the field.

7. Not practicing a difficult piece the night before means your section will be called upon to play it individually in band the next day.

8. "Senior lunch hour" is just a cruel myth.

9. The further away a section is from the podium, the more likely they are to get away with cooking spaghetti during rehearsals. Flutes can just forget about it.

10. It's hard to look sexy wearing white marching shoes.
