Well, the mini-reunion last night was a lot of fun. Marshall lost the game, of course, and there was a plague of crickets, but we pulled through and even met up with some stragglers at Floore's Country Store afterwards.

The band uniforms are flashier than our red/white/maroon wool things: lots of feathers (on the shakos) and sequins, gloves and gauntlets. The marching is different, too (what was that style called, guys?).

The band did more dancing than playing music in the stands, and frankly, their attitude was a bit "lacks-adaisical." Some of them didn't bother to pick up their instruments during songs, the tubas kept playing some monotonous rhythm, and there were many visits from civilian girlfriends.

They made up for it with the half-time show, though. Marshall's show took place after the game because the lame homecoming ceremony took up too much time. They're competing today at UIL at Southwest. We will raise a bottle or can to their success tonight at Mark's house.

Many thanks to Mark and his wife Sherry for hosting a reunion party in their home. We got a tour of their beautiful house and the rug shop, and a rather interesting lecture from Mark. The food and drinks were good, especially the home-made pies, and of course the company couldn't be beat! But next time: more people! There were a lot of leftovers.

Note: I'm still in temporary quarters--a nice condo on the Canyon Lake golf course--and don't have access to a high-speed internet connection. If you have photos to upload to the band website, please send them to Les LeBleu and he will compile a CD of them for me to upload.

We had SO MUCH FUN at the Friday night events. (Had a Dallas wedding on Saturday - couldn't be at Mark & Sherry's place then).

Mike Groves was there Friday. I think that evening was the most I've ever been able to talk with Mike (him being my elder and all...as a junior back in high school, I was a bit intimidated by those seniors). Mike's as friendly and warm as can be. He alone would have made my trip worthwhile.

It was great seeing everyone who was there. Lisa Black hasn't changed at all. Mike, Chip, Jon & Brad are still making music (and I can't wait to hear it). I know Mark is still involved musically, too.

My thanks again to Mark & Sherry for pulling people together and Robin for doing this website.

HEY!!! Although they weren't able to be at this reunion, I WAS able to talk on the phone with DAVID LANFORD, JOHN GILSDORF and MATT WEAVER (Hegranes). It was wonderful to hear their voices and get a taste of their personalities again after all these years.

Wow David, thank you for those kind words! I have to say I too enjoyed seeing you again, and this time it is I who is in awe. Successful in music, in marriage (great gal you got there), and in life...you definitely have it all together.
Thank you for being there.

For those of you who didn't come to the Homecoming game, I just want to say this...It wasn't about reliving high school, it wasn't about living in the past. I feel it was just something as simple as being with old friends, family of a sort, being together as we were. Not one of the students in the band showed any resentment having the elders there, quite the contrary...the section leaders came up to us(those that chose to bring an instrument)and invited us to join them in our old section. The band Vp came up to us before the game and welcomed us, totally respectfully. Rey Meza told us while the band was doing their homecoming thing on the field that the kids were so excited about us being there, that they went and did some research about our group. They were completely stunned by the fact that we did the Guinness thing, just couldn't believe that something like that was possible. Bottom line here was they were truly thrilled to have us there.

As I said before, Rey Meza wants to make this an annual event. I'm all for it, not because I want to play in a high school marching band again, but because we, as a group have something to contribute to those kids. Seeing us, 10, 20 30 years later, some still doing the music, some off in other worlds, but all still bonded by the experience we shared "back in the day", shows those kids that some things in this ever-changing world DO endure, and lifelong friendships are formed at that period of life. It's a good thing to do, not just for ourselves, but more so for them.

Hi! My name is Alan and I graduated from Marshall in `02. The band has changed a lot in recent years. My last year there things were already a lot different than they were when I started. Things were a lot more relaxed and most people really do not care. They are just there to have fun. This has a lot to do with the size of the band. I can remember when if someone really did not want to be there or were goofing off, they were removed and immediately replaced. Now there are not enough people in the band to do this mostly b/c of the spit with O’Connor. So there are a lot of people in the band who do not really want to be there but cannot be removed b/c there is no one to replace them.

The uniforms have changed twice since the red/white/maroon ones. For a while we had all white uniforms and then in `01 we went to the current black ones.

The reason I think they danced more than played that night was b/c of UIL the next day. I do not think Meza wanted everybody to blow their lip that night and then have problems the next day. He has done this in past years. My senior year we played more music than I could ever remember the band playing. We played a lot of older things that the parents recognized and the students did not. My flip folder was thicker that year than the past three years combined. What monotonous tuba rhythm are you talking about? I played tuba.

I was really surprised when I could just walk right over to the band and go and visit with out anyone stopping me. I think the cause of that problem is the design of the stadium. At Gus there is a railing and JROTC people separating the band from the crowd. Also at Gus the only people allowed on the band side were current band people and past. When you went too walked up the parents would be standing at the entrance to the band side and if one of them did not recognize you, you were not allowed to go in. At Farris there is not the case. There is nothing separating the band from the crowd. They really do need some way to keep the crowd and the band apart. There were also no JROTC to be seen at Farris that night.

Well I hope this helps explain some of the things that are going on. By the way the band made a one at UIL. That is something like 40 in a row. At least that is what I think it is. Let me know if you have another count

P.S.

If any one who reads this knows Heather Nicole Garcia who graduated in `00 please get in contact with me. She played bassoon in concert season and did guard in marching. She also had a sister named Shannon. Or if you know someone who knows what happened to her tell me who that person is or ask them. Last I heard of her she was going to Baylor but my sister told me that she might have gotten into some marine biology school in FL. Please any and all information would be greatly appreciated. If you have any information email me at ap1096@hotmail.com.

Thanks

Hi my name is Jennifer Aldrich graduated from Marshall "00". I have to agree with Allen the band has changed a lot. I remember when Meza would get upset if you did not play in the stands at a football game. I was at the homecoming game and agree that they dance more then they played but meza doesn't like to play a lot before contest. Uniforms when I was in band where white and with maroon stripes on the sleeves with those heavey hats with feathers.(which I a pround owner of one of those hats). Then we went to the new ones in in 2000. I enjoy going to the games and see how much the band has change and see former band members. Hey Allen e-amil at irsh340@icqmail.com.
