Hi! My name is Alan and I graduated from Marshall in `02. The band has changed a lot in recent years. My last year there things were already a lot different than they were when I started. Things were a lot more relaxed and most people really do not care. They are just there to have fun. This has a lot to do with the size of the band. I can remember when if someone really did not want to be there or were goofing off, they were removed and immediately replaced. Now there are not enough people in the band to do this mostly b/c of the spit with O’Connor. So there are a lot of people in the band who do not really want to be there but cannot be removed b/c there is no one to replace them.

The uniforms have changed twice since the red/white/maroon ones. For a while we had all white uniforms and then in `01 we went to the current black ones.

The reason I think they danced more than played that night was b/c of UIL the next day. I do not think Meza wanted everybody to blow their lip that night and then have problems the next day. He has done this in past years. My senior year we played more music than I could ever remember the band playing. We played a lot of older things that the parents recognized and the students did not. My flip folder was thicker that year than the past three years combined. What monotonous tuba rhythm are you talking about? I played tuba.

I was really surprised when I could just walk right over to the band and go and visit with out anyone stopping me. I think the cause of that problem is the design of the stadium. At Gus there is a railing and JROTC people separating the band from the crowd. Also at Gus the only people allowed on the band side were current band people and past. When you went too walked up the parents would be standing at the entrance to the band side and if one of them did not recognize you, you were not allowed to go in. At Farris there is not the case. There is nothing separating the band from the crowd. They really do need some way to keep the crowd and the band apart. There were also no JROTC to be seen at Farris that night.

Well I hope this helps explain some of the things that are going on. By the way the band made a one at UIL. That is something like 40 in a row. At least that is what I think it is. Let me know if you have another count

P.S.

If any one who reads this knows Heather Nicole Garcia who graduated in `00 please get in contact with me. She played bassoon in concert season and did guard in marching. She also had a sister named Shannon. Or if you know someone who knows what happened to her tell me who that person is or ask them. Last I heard of her she was going to Baylor but my sister told me that she might have gotten into some marine biology school in FL. Please any and all information would be greatly appreciated. If you have any information email me at ap1096@hotmail.com.

Thanks

Hi my name is Jennifer Aldrich graduated from Marshall "00". I have to agree with Allen the band has changed a lot. I remember when Meza would get upset if you did not play in the stands at a football game. I was at the homecoming game and agree that they dance more then they played but meza doesn't like to play a lot before contest. Uniforms when I was in band where white and with maroon stripes on the sleeves with those heavey hats with feathers.(which I a pround owner of one of those hats). Then we went to the new ones in in 2000. I enjoy going to the games and see how much the band has change and see former band members. Hey Allen e-amil at irsh340@icqmail.com.
