Subject: How posh are we?

This 'posh Fulham' thing is starting to get on my nerves. Back in the day, we'd get called friendly, eccentric, that type of thing. But I don't remember straight-up posh being raised so often.

Now, it's the standard way of talking about us - complete with daft things like social media coverage of cheeseboards on trains for away trips, and people bringing sponge cakes to games, all over the place.

Obviously Fulham is an affluent area, and sure, we have plenty of affluent fans. But this is London in 2024 - so do Chelsea, Arsenal, Spurs, West Ham etc. I guess we have less of the other extreme to counter the posh - ie, plenty of poshos at Chelsea, but the last remains of their Headhunters past still hanging in there. We have quite a lot of older fans as well - which I supose some people equate with posh.

Anyhows, I don't think we're as posh as we're made out to be. It's a crap stereotype to have fixed to us. And frankly, away from home, we can be very un-posh indeed.

It’s the area. Funny thing is, I doubt many of those living in the million plus houses nearby go to the games, whereas back in the day it was common to see people coming out of homes nearby and heading for the ground.       - By ‘posh’ I assume opposing fans mean what used to be called the hooray Henry types, upper middle class (at the very least) types, rather than just those who’ve been successful in life. I’ve known a lot of Fulham fans in that category but since they will feature amongst the support of most clubs I suspect that is not what is meant by posh. We are posh. Most of our fans don't post on sites like these as this type of primitive site is for EDF luddite types. Podcasts such as Fulhamish veer to posh and eccentric, but again too common for our average affluent supporter. That said, we're a much nicer bunch than Scum whose crossection of support veers from celebrity tryhards craving authenticity to the most horrendously nasty office types who crave anger, small mindedness, casual racism and misogyny and faux working class accents.   - The circles I mix in are so posh, that they're too posh even for Fulham. To them, football is a vulgar sport with irksome supporters. A better class of person goes for rugger, tennis, equestrian and cricket, although country cricket as unfortunately international cricket and the limited overs form of the game also attracts hooligans. Re: How posh are we? I grew up in Fulham and only moved out of London in my thirties. Fulham has changed and become a very affluent area nothing wrong with that. Back in the day it was very different more hockney than Hooray Henry. I absolutely love the area and it has progressed. .out of the fans I have met are pretty decent including the affluent and not so. The image doesn't bother me it's a fantastic stadium and a great pace to watch football with many nice pubs to have a beer in pre match. If we were as posh (and affluent) as some would like us to be, then we would fill out the Riverside Stand every week. That we don't suggests that our support is mainly drawn from people who have to work, or are retired from work on a pension. Anyone who can afford a season ticket at a London club has a reasonable income so are not poor. CC always had its lovely immediate setting, but 60 years ago everywhere looked grungier and there was little obvious affluence around football grounds or among attendees. Fifty years ago next May, my cup final ticket cost £1.50, which even in today's money is only £15. Inevitable that difference has started to tell, not just at Fulham. i was brought up on a low income council estate in battersea by a hardworking immigrant mother and a non working drug addict father, but having the triple whammy of being a Fulham fan, being able to use long words, and being called Tristan seems to convince most that I am borderline royalty. Posh means different thing to different people, for a lot of rough and ready types, it just means comfortably middle class- which we are in large parts.
