  • It is odd. The perception of these three players at the start of the season was that ESR & Nelson were stars coming off injury-hit seasons who just needed to find regular playing time, while Sess was an injury prone player whose top-level career was potentially over. ESR was sold for 30m, Nelson touted as 20m+, Sess struggling to find a home for free. Sess had all last season out and, as a full-back, is in a less prized role.     • Despite a couple of moments sess has 70 odd prem games and to be honest not been very good (for us previously or spurs). ESR similar amount in prem has shown he can do it at one of the top clubs in Europe. Nelson, mainly due injuries, just hasn’t ever had enough games to show if his moments can make him a consistent prem player. I’d also question where he plays, not good enough defensively as a LB, doesn’t influence games enough as a wide attacker.         • Small sample definitely, but if you look at the one season before this that ESR & Sess each had a full Premier League run they are very close: e.g. 8 goal contributions for Sess to ESR's 12, but each with Expected contribs of 8. Sess' time in the Championship FAR out did that of ESR at Huddersfield. Sess' & Nelson's respective times at Hoffenheim are about equal whereas Sess' best PL season is much better than Nelson's.           • If the 18/19 season is the one you are referring to in terms of the 8 goal contributions, its also worth pointing out that, at the time, (throughout that whole season) he was 18 years old. He was also being played as an inverted right winger for much of it, which seemed to destroy his confidence. Phil Foden, a year older, in his breakthrough season, got 7 contributions.             • I’m glad it was not just me that remembers Parker playing him inverted. His confidence was ebbing by that point but playing him inverted just about destroyed it. The conundrum with Sess is whether he is a good enough footballer to justify a place if his goal scoring dries up.               • It was a double whammy, wasn't it. Started with going from a manager who trusted him and developed him, to Ranieri, who publicly called him out, hauled him off at half time 3 times, to Parker, who played him in a completely alien position.                 • This is what I mean by there being an unbalance in the expectations. Questions the right position to play in (see questions over ESR playing as a wide forward or No. 10), age, confidence and fitness apply equally to all three, yet if we're basing our upside calculations on past form on balance that points towards Sess. Yet the pre-season expectations were wildly different. I suppose this is more a way of saying that ESR needs more time and patience than it says anything about how we handle Sess.                   • Yes, agree with all that, albeit, i've been saying for quite a while that i think we've slightly under-utilised Sess this season. I understand why to some extent, but i think part of the problem is that he only seemed to be considered LB cover for the first 4 months or so, (when we have a LB who plays every minute) whereas recently we've seen his quality as a wide midfield option. When we've needed a late goal, I think he's been an option we should have used more.                     • Very much agree, though that's definitely not something I've been saying for a while as I most definitely succumbed to the thinking that he was a major reclamation project whereas ESR was a budding star. A post below made me realize that Sess reminds me of BDR; a multipositional tool whose good for a goal. My suspicion is that that's his floor, with Iwobi-levels of upside. • Problem is where do you play him, at LB Rob is our best player, rarely misses a minute. Left side attack, our game is based on that forward coming inside to provide space for Robbo to bomb on and cross, if sess plays there, given his left foot, it hinders that. He’s never looked confident cutting in from right. He deserves more minutes, if nothing else he knows how to score, but where is a conundrum. If he can show aggression & confidence like v spurs he can be a solid prem player still.   • Completely understand that Jimenez has been extremely good value (what did he cost? £5m?), but no one seriously think's he's the answer? Yes, he's been a bargain, but for want of a better phrase, he fannies around a lot in front of goal, when you just want someone to put their foot through it. For me, centre-forward position is the weakest link in the Fulham team and the signing of a better centre-forward in the summer could really see us kick-on.     • I think he's been the answer: to the question how do we replace Mitro. Not all questions have straight forward answers, lose one, buy one. But with Raul+Muniz the team is scoring at near the same rate (1.48 goals per 90 vs 1.45), while keeping more possession (in part thanks to that "fann[ying] around") and thus conceding less. And he's serving as a bridge between Mitro and our up-and-coming potential-superstar No. 9. If that's not the answer, then probably we're asking different questions.   • A player with a goal-scoring knack, one season with 20+ goal contributions in the Championship, able to play wide forward, wing back, full-back and maybe elsewhere reminds me very much of a player we lost last year and have missed: BDR. Also, not dissimilar (inc. looking at career stats) to a player we've very much relied on this year: Iwobi. Those might be good baseline and upside projects for him if we increase our expectations to ESR-levels, where I think they should be.
