You forget that Leto tells us in COD that the worms were brought to Arrakis. Thus, they had to come from somewhere, so obviously they COULD survive elsewhere. But who put them there, and when, and why? Perhaps they had to do the kind of terraforming the BGs are doing in Heretics/Chapterhouse.

I am currently re-reading COD and really catching quite a lot of references that are followed up on in the prequels. I am starting to think that COD and GEOD are the real keystones to who the mysterious adversary is in DUNE 7.
