Shantal nodded. “I understand Michael, let me help you.” she whispered, stretching her hand to touch his cheek softly. Her memory began to replay the words Faroush had said while explaining to her about the drugs effect and
Michael’s unique abilities.
*~*~*~*~*~*
Shantal nodded. “Tell me what the effects will be once the first dose of Kashnari is introduced.” She asked.
Faroush sighed. “He must be conscious when he is administered the first dose. It will most probably be in his food, possibly his drinks, he will become dizzy, weak and unable to control his thoughts. The drug is potent, if it is administered in his drink he will most likely collapse into your arms within minutes of it’s ingestion. The potency could be lessened if he does not suffer from the sedative effects." brushing his fingers down his chin he sighed. "That would be best, if he can rest and allow the sedative to drain from his system he would be less affected. But knowing that Rahine might desire to use him soon after his arrival you must be aware that keeping him conscious might not be an option.”
Shantal frowned. “Will he simply lose consciousness?”
“No child, the first dose of Kashnari will cause a seizure.”
Seeing her eyes widen with fear he explained. “a very mild one, Shantal he will lose consciousness immediately after ingesting the drug but should recover within five minutes. His gaze will be glazed and he might be unresponsive at first. But he should not lose consciousness for long after the seizure.” he tenderly brushed a stray curl from Shantal’s cheek and smiled. “Just make sure he is able to perform.”
Shantal slowly looked away. “But what if he becomes unresponsive? How strong will the first dose be?”
“The first dose is strong, but as long as he is not under sedation when he ingests the first dose he should be alright.”
He brushed his fingers through his hair. “But, you must be advised that if the sedatives he is given are strong he could slip into a coma. He would be unresponsive to any stimulation.”
Shantal closed her eyes fearing the worst. “If that happens what can I do?”
Faroush shook his head. “If he slips into a coma there will be nothing that anyone can do, except speed his death. Shantal if he becomes unresponsive after the first dose of Kashnari you must attempt to make him react, whatever it takes but do not allow him to die, for if he dies his wife will destroy us all.”
~*~*~*~*~*
She almost screamed as Michael collapsed limply against her. His head cradled between her breasts, suddenly his neck arched back and he gasped.
“Help...me.” He exhaled before his eyes rolled into the back of his head and his jaw clenched tightly. He gave one jerk and then went totally limp in her arms.
Shantal lifted her shaking hand toward his neck, softly pressing in search of a pulse, she sighed as she found a strong heart beat. His breath softly brushed her cheek making her smile. “It will be alright Michael, I won’t allow Rahine to harm you I promise.” She whispered against his lips before softly brushing hers over his tenderly.
She slowly lifted her lips from his and sniffed, wiping a stray tear from her cheek she gently cradled Michael’s head on her breasts and called for Gadari.
Gadari entered and sighed. “I thought the drugs would be less potent Shantal, what happened?” He asked as he slowly kneeled and lifted Michael into his arms carefully laying him on the bed.
“The wine had the strongest dose, he gulped it down quickly. Faroush did say that the sedative would affect the effectiveness of the Kashanri.”
Gadari frowned. “He does not look like he’s drugged Shantal, look at him.” Gadari lifted Michael’s arm and let go. They watched as his arm flopped lifeless beside him.
“Whatever was in the wine is not Kashnari. The potion affects his mind not his body. Not like this.”
Shantal lowered her gaze to her hands. “Faroush said he would be unconscious for five minutes-“
Gadari grasped her chin between his fingers and forced her to look at him. “Shantal this man is not unconscious, take a good look at him.”
Shantal’s gaze shifted toward Michael, she noticed how softly he breathed. “What do you mean?”
Gadari hissed and knelt down beside her. “Kashnari makes whoever drinks it a zombie, it weakens the person’s will it does not render anyone deathly limp. He looks dead Shantal!”
Shantal sniffed once again, closing her tear filled eyes she nodded and stood, she slowly opened her eyes and stared at Michael, she noticed the paleness and sheen that covered his skin. “Gadari what can we do? He was still under the sedative effects but you’re right, he should not be this inert. He is completely unresponsive, Rahine will not like that.” She said as she took a seat beside Michael on the bed.
Gadari shrugged. “I don’t know, Rahine is not known for her leniency and caring ways. I’ll get Faroush and-“
Shantal grabbed his hand. “No, Faroush is busy with Jamil, besides we aren’t supposed to know about the drugs.” she looked around her room wondering what could help Michael revive sooner, as her gaze roamed across the room toward the large rose bush placed beside the door to the garden a memory assailed her. “Gadari bring Onnia here, she knows about drugs, if anyone can get him to respond it will be her.”
Gadari nodded and quickly rushed out of the room in search of the elusive Onnia.
Shantal gently lifted Michael’s hand and pressed a kiss to his palm. “Please wake up Michael, open your eyes.” she whispered softly.
Michael moaned softly, tossing his head to the side.
Shantal watched as his lips opened and he mumbled something too softly for her to hear. She leaned over, gently caressing his cheek trying to elicit a response from him.
Suddenly Michael arched his back off the bed and screamed.
“NIKITA!”
Shantal jerked away falling off the bed. Her eyes wide and filled with fear as Michael tossed his head back and whimpered before collapsing once again upon the pillows.
“Michael?” Shantal whispered softly as she kneeled beside him on the bed. Her shaking fingers softly pressed against his throat, she smiled noticing the strong but slow pulse there. Carefully leaning over him she pressed her fingers to his lips, feeling the soft breath exhaled. “Thank god!” She whispered and collapsed beside him on the bed.

Meanwhile deep inside the bowels of Section one.
Walter was pacing the corridor in front of the delivery room where Nikita fought a losing battle to stop the birth of her child.
“Walter sit down, you’re making me very uneasy.” Birkoff whispered.
Walter stared deeply into Birkoff’s dark eyes. “I can’t amigo, my sugar is inside that room hurting. She needs Michael and for all we know the man is-“
“Don’t say it!” Birkoff stated. “Michael cannot be dead, there must be a way to find out for sure.”
Walter stared at Birkoff, his pale blue eyes filled with tears at the realization that Birkoff was hurting just as much about Michael’s disappearance. Taking a seat beside the young man he softly took his hand and squeezed.
“I’m sorry kid, I never think before speaking. I know how much you care for Michael, he is like a brother to you huh?”
Birkoff slowly lowered his gaze to the floor and nodded.
“He can’t be dead Walter, if he is Nikita will be lost.”
Walter nodded and softly embraced the young man. Suddenly the doors to the delivery room slammed open and Doctor Wallace stepped out.
Birkoff and Walter stood quickly. “What’s wrong Frank?” Walter asked as the doctor approached them.
Frank Wallace shook his head and smiled. “Sit down, both of you, everything is alright for now.”
Birkoff and Walter took a seat in front of the doctor and sighing with relief waited for news.
Frank smiled once again. “That lady is strong, she fought to keep that child inside and was successful. For now the baby is alright, but Op-Nikita is still in delicate
condition. She needs plenty of rest, no exercise and a lot of calm.”
Walter nodded gravely. “Will she be allowed to return to her post?”
Wallace shook his head. “No she will not leave this room, her condition could become grave if we don’t monitor her every moment until the baby is born.” Running his hands through his hair he sighed. He looked up and met Birkoff’s
fear filled gaze. “Don’t worry young man, she will be fine as long as she does what she is told.” turning toward Walter he raised his brows and asked. “Will that be a problem?”
Walter and Birkoff stared at each other before turning to look at Wallace and in unison they answered. “Yes!”
Wallace almost laughed. “Will we have to keep her sedated? That would not be good for the child.”
Walter shook his head. “No she’ll obey, she’ll just need an incentive to be good.” turning to look at Birkoff he nodded and Birkoff stood and smiled. The young man quickly turned and left them alone.
“I’ll be in the perch if you need me Walter, I’ve got several things I need to do before visiting with Nikita.” Birkoff stated before the elevator doors closed.
Walter smiled and shook his head. “That kid will never stop surprising me.” He sobered up some as he glanced at Wallace once again.
Wallace stared at Walter, wondering what type of motley crew worked closely with Nikita. He sighed and stood. “Want to see her?”
Walter nodded and stood, following the doctor into the cold, sterile white room where Nikita rested.
“I need to bring several nurses and tech’s down here, will you stay with her until I return?”
Walter nodded. “Just hurry up, I’ve got a mission going hot within two hours.”
Wallace nodded and clapped him on the back. “Will be back within twenty minutes.” He turned and left Walter alone with a sleeping Nikita.
As soon as the door closed Walter pulled a stool beside the bed and gently brushed his fingers down her cheek. Nikita stirred and her eyelids fluttered softly before opening.
“Walter?” She whispered softly. Frowning she looked around the room, finally turning her pale blue gaze back to him she sighed. “It’s true then, he’s gone.” She stated sadly.
Walter gently leaned over and kissed her hand. “Sugar you must be strong, for Adam and this little one here.”
Nikita shook her head. “Why? There’s nothing to live for anymore.” She turned her face away from Walter, trying to hide the tears that overflowed and slowly slipped down her pale cheeks.
Walter huffed. “This is not like you sugar, you’re a fighter. Don’t give up so easily, remember that we have no real proof that Michael is dead.” he stood and walked around the bed, clutching her chin he forced her to look at him.
“Michael is missing, and until we have a body you will not allow yourself to believe he is dead understood?”
Nikita jerked her chin away from his strong grasp. She lifted tear filled eyes to glare at Walter but slowly nodded. “Of course." Taking a deep breath she forced herself to think about the job. "Have they sent a replacement?”
Walter smiled. “Nope, George has been informed of the situation and decided to give you three days before sending anyone, right now I’m the one covering for you. But there are people who want to make sure you’re well.”
Nikita frowned rubbing her large abdomen she looked at Walter. ”Who?”
Walter smiled softly. “Well we’ve got Seymour going around like his head was cut off, and there is James Davenport that is worried about you, plus several others.”
Nikita smiled softly, knowing that Birkoff would be extremely worried if she got a splinter in her figner, but Davenport? He was nice and Michael trusted him enough but she could not imagine that he cared about anyone. She closed her eyes, allowing the image of Michael to flood her senses, the pain that seared through her chest made her gasp and she shook her head, sighing as she felt a movement under her touch.
“Active little tike huh?” Walter asked as he took a seat beside her on the bed.
Nikita nodded absently. “She’s always active when I think of Michael. Do you think that he truly is still alive Walter?”
Walter took her hand and nodded. “Michael is invincible, we both have watched him walking around and debriefing with two bullets inside him. I believe that he is alive and will contact us as soon as he can.” Squeezing her hand tightly he stared deeply into her blue eyes. “You must believe the same Sugar, if there is any chance of him being alive, you must send him all your strength and will, you must keep him alive inside you until he is able to return to us or.....”
Nikita squeezed his hand. "Or what?"
Walter sighed. "Or we find his body."
Nikita nodded, her eyes fluttered closed as she gently brought her hand up and kissed Walter’s. “Stay with me Walter, please. I’m so tired but I want you to stay with me.”
Walter’s eyes misted over at her admission, he slowly leaned over and kissed her temple. “I’ll be here sugar, I swear.”
