Shantal’s eyelids drifted open at the softly uttered words that came from deep inside Michael. She sniffed and softly rubbed her eyes wiping the sleep from them, the room was covered in darkness. “How long did I sleep?” She asked
herself as she slowly turned over unto her back and reached out for the lamp beside her bed.
Hearing a noise she turned the lamp on and looked over at Michael. She noticed that his paleness had diminished and the sweat had dried on his skin. She reached out her index finger and rubbed his parted lips gently, smiling as his tongue slipped out and licked the pad of her finger. She slowly laid her head on his bare chest, her cheek pressed softly over Michael’s softly beating heart.
“Andrea was right you know.” She whispered softly, her hand gently rubbing up and down his arm. “She said that you acted like you did not care, but she saw the truth, she knew you love Nikita deeply.” She lifted her cheek as Michael whimpered softly once again, she frowned at seeing Michael’s deep, pain filled frown.
“Michael?” She asked against his pouting lips.
Michael shivered softly and whimpered once again making Shantal’s eyes widen.
“Michael?” She asked louder as she carefully placed her fingers upon his cheek.
Michael pulled away from her touch, a deeper frown marring the beauty of his features. Another shiver ran down his body making Shantal worry.
Standing she pushed the soft silk canopy to the side. She gasped as the light covered Michael’s features brightly making her forget what she was about to do.
“I cannot believe that you exist Michael, you are so unique and perfectly made. I wonder if Rahine’s sister ever took advantage of you?” She reached out and softly caressed his cheek once again. Frowning as Michael shivered anew. “I don’t understand. Why are you shivering?” Shantal thought and closed her eyes trying to rememeber if Faroush had said anything about Michael’s present condition.
“No Faroush, said you would be unconscious for five minutes and it’s been over-“ checking the clock on the bedside table she hissed. “You’ve been unconscious for over four hours!” Shantal felt another shiver curse through his body, her fingers traced a path down his chest noticing how chill his skin was.
Shantal quickly jumped out of bed and rushed to the cedar chest that rested against one wall of her spacious room. Opening it she quickly grabbed the large blanket and returned to Michael’s side. She covered his shaking body with the blanket. She smiled at noticing the pattern on the blanket, a soft grey and black hue created several wolves wandering through a dark forest. Shantal chuckled.
“I just had to cover you with the blanket that represents you Michael. What a coincidence.” She whispered as she gently rubbed his arms trying to warm his skin. “You’re like a wolf on the hunt, silent and deadly, but soft and gentle with your loved ones. You are quite an oxymoron my dear-“
Shantal jumped as the door to her chamber opened and a tiny old woman stepped inside. Shantal’s gaze roamed over the older woman, dark skin, darker curly hair almost covered her wrinkled face, she wore dark robes that covered her tiny petite frame making the woman look fearless. She smiled gently as the woman stepped closer to the bed.
“You called Lalla Shantal?” Onnia asked as her gaze perused the man on the bed.
Shantal nodded softly. “Onnia, you were supposed to be here over four hours ago.” she lifted her gaze toward Gadari and frowned.
Gadari shrugged and smiled. “The woman was not easy to find Lalla, I had to search the entire castle.” He stated.
Shantal closed her eyes knowing that Onnia did like to hide in the oddest places. “Where did you find her this time?” She asked as she looked at Onnia.
Gadari looked away. “Hiding behind the large roses inside Lalla Rahine’s private garden, while the lady was otherwise engaged with the man who does not exist.”
Shantal stared wide eyed at Onnia. A smile softly spreading over her features “You were spying on Rahine again?”
Onnia shrugged and waved her hand. “That is not important child, tell me why you searched for me.”
Shantal sobered up quickly and sighed. “Something is wrong, he is too listless and inert, he continues to shiver, I’m afraid for his life.” Shantal softly said as her fingers continued to brush against his temple.
Onnia nodded. “What was he given?” She asked as she slowly made her way to his side.
Shantal looked behind Onnia and smiled at Gadari. “I’ll call you if we need you Gadari, thank you.”
Gadari nodded once and bowed, quickly closing the door.
Shantal turned back and gazed upon Michael’s prone body as another shiver cursed through him. “He was sedated and given-“
Onnia turned her dark gaze to stare deeply at Shantal.
“What was he given to make him react this way?” Onnia lifted his hand noticing the strength of his muscles which laid dormant under his pale skin.
Shantal lowered her gaze to the floor and shrugged. “Rahine ordered it Onnia, but I’m afraid that-“
“KASHNARI?” Onnia shouted.
Shantal shivered and looked around the room, fearful that the woman’s shout had been heard outside. She turned fear widened eyes at the woman. Nodding Shantal fisted her hands and inhaled sharply.
Onnia hissed as she gently lifted the blanket off Michael’s shivering form. She placed her fingers against his chest, over his heart and pressed softly. She could feel the soft pattering of his heart as the Kashnari cursed through his body. “How long ago was he sedated?”
Shantal turned her fear filled gaze toward the garden and sighed. “He was brought in nine hours ago, he was still under the tranquilizers effect when Faroush injected him with the sedative. Then he woke up and asked several questions, he was disoriented and confused, a bit weak.” She turned her gaze back to look at Michael.
Onnia nodded and softly ran her hands down his body, pressing firmly on his left side and groin, she gently smiled as her touch made the inert man’s nether region
come to life.
“Was he coherent when he was awake?”
Shantal nodded, her gaze riveted on Michael’s slowly waking body. She shivered and rubbed her arms softly. “He was not entirely coherent.“ Shantal jumped as Michael arched his neck back and cried out as if in agony.
“Nikita No!”
Onnia’s dark gaze shifted toward Shantal. “Has he done that before?”
Shantal nodded and sat beside Michael. Her fingers gently rubbed his stubbled cheek as Onnia continued to peruse his naked body.
Shantal’s gaze drifted back toward Onnia’s. “Onnia he collapsed once he drank the wine. I believe that the drug was extremely potent, Faroush said that-“
Onnia waved her hand at Shantal. “Faroush will say anything to force you to do his will, just as that whore the Kalifah Jamil married.” Onnia stared deeply into Shantal’s dark gaze, seeking knowledge. “Did you know they would use Kashnari on him?”
Shantal nodded slowly. “Yes Faroush confided in me before Michael arrived, but it was supposed to be a secret, I’m not supposed to know that Rahine is using it.”
Onnia nodded pressing her fingers over Michael’s heart once again she sighed. “Shantal child, How do you know his name? Did he confide that to you?”
Shantal’s eyes widened. “Yes and no, he did not deny his name when I used it.”
Onnia smiled. “Who told you his name child? Was it that pretty red head?”
Shantal nodded. “Yes Andrea told me a lot about him Onnia.”
The older woman nodded. “You are too kind hearted for your own good. He won your heart already? Child you must-” She frowned as Michael shivered once again and softly whispered something too soft to be heard.
Forgetting what she had been about to say she sighed and reached out, gently lifting Michael’s left eyelid. Onnia noticed that his iris was enlarged and dark almost obliterating the paleness of his green eyes. She knew immediately what was wrong with Michael.
She knew that Hester’s Kashnari was extremely potent, ten times stronger than the original version, and Hester was using that original recipe to create this drug. Onnia sighed knowing that the Kashnari was not all the old witch said it was.
Onnia had discovered Kashnari by accident several months before while preparing a sleeping potion for The kalifah’s pregnant concubine, the last of the women that carried his child. Onnia had prepared the potion and given it to Deborah, Onnia remembered that the young girl collapsed several minutes after ingesting the strong potion and had slowly slipped into an eternal sleep, the child, for Deborah was barely sixteen years old and the youngest of the Kalifah's concubines had been gifted to Jamil for services rendered to an older man who worked at some secret government office. Onnia was not supposed to know as much as she did, but having raised Jamil and his five dead brothers and sister, she had learned to be silent and invisible to all while still being able to learn much.
Onnia shook her head at her memories. Hester had smiled as the girl had been carried out of the castle to be abandoned at the local hospital. the unborn child taken by surgery several days before Deborah had been safely and secretly taken away. They had received news that the girl had died several weeks ago, the girl never opened her eyes again.
Onnia frowned as Michael began to toss his head side to side, making the soft curls fall across his face. Shantal smiled and gently brushed the curls off his cheek as she softly crooned to him. Onnia saw that Michael quickly settled down with a soft sigh, his cheek pressed against Shantal’s cupped hand.
“Very well, I will give you a potion that will revive him, but you must find a way to avoid him ingesting anymore of the Kashnari.” Onnia lifted his arm once again and sighed, noticing how limp he was once again. She gently placed his hand beside him and reached out to grab Shantal’s chin, forcing the woman to turn and look at her.
“Shantal this man might be strong physically but his body has suffered too much.” She sighed as Shantal frowned.
Onnia gently let go of her chin and pointed to Michael’s hip where a small pink scar was still prominent against his pale skin.
“He has not yet recovered from injuries he received not long ago. You see that scar?”
Shantal shivered, nodding as her gaze roamed his naked body.
Onnia sighed once again. “Shantal he must have received that scar barely weeks ago. The scars that cover his body are too many for a normal man, knowing who is Rahine’s sister and what the woman does I fear this man has been abused severely. Can you see the scars that have been left upon his body?”
Shantal nodded and lifted tear filled eyes. “Yes, I know what he does and who he is Onnia, you don’t have to remind me that he has been abused. I know perfectly well how much abuse he has received and at the hands of who.” Shantal stood and slowly walked to the window.
Onnia shuffled her old frame toward Shantal, standing beside her they stared out at the moonlit garden. “So you know that his scars run deep? That the scars of his soul are much harder to recover from than the physical ones?”
Shantal turned and looked at Michael once again, her eyes filling with impotent tears. “Yes I know Onnia, I know because several women that have shared his life, if even on a limited basis have told me. Even Rahine has enjoyed the tales her sister told us about Michael Samuelle.”
Onnia jerked away. “That is the famous Michael Samuelle?”
Shantal chuckled softly. “Yes the man on the bed, the man who seems too fragile to survive inside the harem, he is THE Michael Samuelle.”
Onnia shivered convulsively. “And knowing this you still are going to help Rahine?”
Shantal turned her confused gaze on Onnia. “Yes, why?”
Onnia took a step back and shook her head. “You’re not afraid of his retaliation once he is free? You know he will destroy all of us-“
Shantal grabbed Onnia’s arms and shook the older woman softly. “Onnia he won’t retaliate, believe me. Just please help me bring him back before he is lost.”
Onnia closed her eyes and sighed. “Fine, but as soon as he is awake I will leave and never return, you should do the same, leave Rahine to deal with him-“
“No! If Rahine is left alone with him she will destroy the small part of his soul that still lives, Onnia you told me several times that if a person had no hope they died inside, well this man has suffered the worst of losses, he has lost his parents, his sister, his wife and two of his children, he almost did not survive losing his second son. His wife was the only one who kept him alive after those losses.”
Onnia pulled away from Shantal’s hold. “Rahine knows what he has suffered?”
Shantal nodded. “Yes her own sister perpetrated most of those losses on him. We must help him recover enough to help us esca-“ Shantal covered her mouth with her hand, her eyes wide and filled with fear, she quickly turned away.
Onnia frowned. “You mean to-“
Shantal shook her head. “Don't ask Onnia, just make sure he lives and wakes up soon, Rahine will come for him at anytime and he must be awake to please her.”
Onnia scoffed. “Girl what you want is a miracle! This man will not be able to please anyone for several hours yet.” She took one last look at Michael and sighed. “But I will make the potion to revive him. What I need you to do is make sure that no more drugs are administered to him.”
Shantal returned to sit beside Michael, her hand gently lifted his toward her lips. Shantal closed her eyes and placed a soft kiss upon his hand, a tear slipping slowly
down her cheek she lifted her gaze and looked deeply into the woman’s eyes.
“Onnia he will be sedated for the next six weeks and the Kashnari will continue to be administered to him, if he does not eat they will inject the purest type of the drug into his blood. There’s nothing I can do besides trying to keep him from ingesting as much of the Kashnari as i possibly can.”
Onnia closed her eyes and nodded. “You speak true child, I forgot that Rahine wants to play with him and she will not tolerate any denials he might give her.”
Shaking her head Onnia walked to the side of the bed and lifted her bag. “He will not recover fully mind you, he will be weak and disoriented, he will not be able to walk on his own. his sense of balance and coordination will be altered severely by the drugs he must endure. Make sure he understands your plans and what Rahine will expect from him. And if you can, slip this into his drink before he is summoned by Rahine.” Onnia turned and placed a small dark vial in Shantal’s hand.
Shantal lifted her curious gaze toward Onnia. The older woman smiled and nodded. “It’s a light hallucinogen, he will not know what is happening to him and will not remember anything once the effects end. But you must be sure that the Kashnari's effects are not too strong or this will destroy his mind completely.”
Shantal sighed and nodded. “How long before he must entertain Rahine should I give him this?”
Onnia turned and walked toward the bathroom door, smiling she opened the door and entered. “He must have ingested that in a drink at least fifteen minutes before he is summoned by Rahine. And do not worry, the effects of this drug are similar to Kashnari so no one but us three will ever know that he is not under the influence of the more potent drug.” Onnia closed the door allowing Shantal to spend several more minutes alone with Michael before he began to ask questions and demand his freedom.
