Newburgh City Council wants to give itself hefty raises

October 11, 2024

NEWBURGH – The Newburgh City Council wants to grant itself sizeable raises in 2025 and has scheduled a public hearing to gain resident input on the plan.

All seven members of the council serve on a part-time basis. And in addition to their salaries, they receive taxpayer-funded health insurance and are in the state pension system.

The proposal calls for the mayor’s salary of $25,000 a year, up from the current $15,000, a 66.6 percent increase for Torrance Harvey.

The biggest raises would go to the two councilmembers-at-large – Robert McLymore and Omari Shakur, whose real name is Raymond Bryant. Their annual pay would increase by 87.5 percent, going from the current $12,000 per year to $22,500.

The remaining four council members who are elected by ward – Patty Sofokles, Ramona Monteverde, Robert Sklarz, and Giselle Martinez – would see their annual salaries increase from the current $12,000 a year to $20,000.

FOUR YEARS AGO, THE CITY COUNCIL VOTED ITSELF 33 PERCENT PAY RAISES WHILE THE MAYOR RECEIVED A 66 PERCENT PAY HIKE.

A public hearing on the proposed salary hikes is scheduled for October 28.

There is also a provision in the city charter for a petition for a permissive referendum.

If the council votes for the raises and either a referendum is favorable or none is held, the raises would take effect on January 1, 2025.
