Subject: Fire Department Unfair Practices

Condemnation of Favoritism in the City of Newburgh Fire Department

The City of Newburgh Fire Department is in the spotlight again, but unfortunately, it’s not for heroism or service to the community. This time, the focus is on the troubling and all-too-familiar pattern of favoritism that continues to tarnish its promotion practices. It’s an issue that has plagued the department for years, and the latest round of promotions only solidifies the perception that cronyism, not merit, is guiding the decisions of its leadership.

In the most recent promotion, two qualified individuals, who have been passed over multiple times before, were once again overlooked. These candidates consistently outperformed their peers on the promotional exams, demonstrating their competency and readiness for leadership roles. Yet, despite their qualifications and dedication, they were passed over in favor of someone who scored lower—someone who just happens to be a close personal friend of the fire chief.

The decision to promote this individual is a slap in the face not only to those who have worked hard to prove their worth but also to the entire department. The favoritism displayed by the chief is so blatant that, far from being surprised, most members of the department expected this very outcome. There was no shock, no outrage, only resignation to what has become a disturbing norm in Newburgh’s fire department.

This culture of favoritism has created a toxic work environment where merit is disregarded and morale continues to plummet. What kind of message does it send when those who play by the rules and excel are continually overlooked? How can anyone expect fairness in a department where personal relationships seem to outweigh professional qualifications?

It is not enough for the leadership of the fire department to brush this off as an internal matter. The people of Newburgh deserve better. The fire department is meant to be a bastion of integrity, where the best and most qualified are entrusted with leadership positions to serve the community. The current promotion practices undermine that trust and compromise the safety and effectiveness of the entire department.

There is no clearer evidence of the rot in the system than the latest promotion decision. It is a direct affront to fairness, and it calls into question the judgment of the fire chief, who seems more interested in advancing his inner circle than in fostering a department where merit and service are rewarded. The people of Newburgh should demand transparency and accountability, not just for the sake of those passed over, but for the good of the department and the safety of the community it serves.

Enough is enough. The fire chief’s actions are an embarrassment to the City of Newburgh and a betrayal of the values that the fire department should stand for. It’s time for change—before more qualified candidates are ignored and the morale of this once-proud department is damaged beyond repair.
