Susan, you have a line quoted under the LJS TV series:

[Tenderly, to Purity:] "Ah-har, my little woman. Come to my arms. Arr, 'tis better to wear your noose than the executioner's. 'And Sligo over to the lawr, and you an' I'll be spliced. ... Well, speak woman, or forever hold yer peace."

In which episode was this said? I can't remember it from any of the episodes that we have here in the US. Is it from one of the 'unreleased' episodes? I do wish they would release them!!

It is from "The Necklace".

Plot: "A plantation owner and his wife are murdered, and her jewels stolen. Before the man dies, he utters "It was a man with one … " When Long John is later found with her necklace, of course he is suspected, even though he insists that the necklace was given to him by a one-eared man in payment of a debt."

Purity catches the one-eared man, and tries to blackmail Long John, who is in jail, into marrying her by telling him that she will only turn Slygo over to the law if he promises to marry her. Of course she doesn't succeed. <grin>

Arr, indeed, matey! Thanks for the quick answer, Eva. Believe me, if I had any "unreleased" episodes, you guys would know about it! ;-) All those quotes came from the same 14 shows that have been available on video for the last seven years (or more ... a couple of the VHS episodes I have were released in the '80s!).

Oh! Thank you! It sounded a little familiar but I couldn't remember him actually proposing to Purity. I'll have to watch it again to see how he connived his way out of that one. I KNOW he didn't want to get married!!!
When I first read it, I thought that maybe one of our friends from Australia had contributed the line from one of the remaining episodes. I forget, did we ever find out if those episodes were released in Australia last year? I know there was a discussion about it but I don't remember the outcome.

Possible spoiler alert:

As I recall it was a clever bit of reverse psychology. Let me know when you find out, if I don't get a chance to watch it first.

Ah, I loved that episode! I love the quote, "Arr, 'tis better to wear your noose than the executioner's." Anyway, I've got the 14 episodes on VHS and DVD. I hope some day that all 26(?) will be released.

Isn't that just the funniest proposal ever? So what would *your* answer be, ladies? :-)

Hmm, yeah, good question, Sue. Well, considering he didn't actually intend to follow through on it, I'd have probably let the executioner have him! (If he weren't just so darn cute. Gosh, that YouTube video's giving me the vapors!) ;-)

I think Long John and Purity should have gotten married at some point, but I guess that would turn the entire story upsidedown wouldn't it?

Yeah, that was kind of a sub-premise of the show--Purity chasing Long John around. If she finally caught him, it'd be like Ricky finally making Lucy the star of his show on "I Love Lucy"--the whole show would change.

Ha yeah, but you have to admit it would be pretty sweet.
Let's just picture for a moment Long John saying "I do" to Purity. The word "Awwww" comes to mind. Okay, I'll leave him alone.....but it would be cute.

OK, I'll agree, it would have made a nice conclusion to the series if they'd known for sure it was going to end.

Yeah, that was the problem with 50's tv, they never 'ended' a series in those days. They would just leave it dangling. I'm sure they had an idea that it would end and could have filmed an ending episode if they tried but, I guess, maybe it wasn't worth it and they just would stop with the last filming. The first series that I can remember filming an ending was the 'Fugitive'.
Anyway, we could have had a wedding and then little Purity's or Long John's running around the Cask n Anchor Inn!!! Let's try to picture that one!! Arrrrr
Elizabeth, why don't you write an ending to the series and post it? Of course, we still don't know what happened in the remaining episodes of the series. I really wish they would release them.

I could try but i'd have to watch more episodes, i've never watched one all the way through.
Right now I'm working on a fanfic of Robert (most all my writing esays in school revolved around him somehow.)

"Elizabeth, why don't you write an ending to the series and post it?"

That's a really great idea! I hope you can find the time to sit through some episodes.

"Of course, we still don't know what happened in the remaining episodes of the series. I really wish they would release them."

According to that Classic Australian Television site (www.classicaustraliantv.com/advljs1.htm), the final (26th) episode was "Ship o' the Dead," which is currently available and doesn't include any major departures from the original premise. In fact, to me, it really epitomizes the original premise!

The last episode to be aired, however, was "Internal Triangle," on March 31, 1959. There's no description given for that episode (I hope it's not lost!), however, here's the synopsis for "Strange Cargo," which aired just a week before: "While fighting the French, Long John and his crew come across a group of young English women who were held captive. Much to Long John's chagrin, the crew forget all about the French treasure and become besotted by the women, who are being chaperoned by spinster Miss Piper." Either way it doesn't seem like much changed between Long John and Purity.

BTW, I just noticed another homage to Robert Newton in "Pirates of the Caribbean"--the name of the governor's daughter in "Long John Silver" just happens to be Elizabeth! ;-) (Whether the homage is intentional or not, I don't know, but I like to think it is.)

My friend Avelise used to tease me about when Jack Sparrow would say "Elizabeth" of course meaning Elizabeth Swann.
But it was really funny cause she used to say "I bet you like to hear that don't you?" I'm still always like "Avelise, shut up."
In the movie Lonh John Silver isn't the Governor's girl's name Elizabeth?
Ha that's funny, maybe that's why they named Elizabeth Swann ELizabeth!
