Subject: Saluting Officers on Guard Duty
In reply to: Dusty Lind 's message, "Re: The "creative solution" of Gen. Flowers" on 10/ 9/05 4:51:16pm

Dusty,
You are correct in that officers need to be rendered honors by the guard. However, not all officers are equal- those field grade and above (Majors & up) get a "Present Arms". That is what Col. Rogers should have received. However, line officers (Lts. & Captains) only rate an "Attention" and "Shoulder Arms".
The reason this is fresh in my mind is that Cpl. Mathis ran afoul of a Captain the event before Corinth out here in the PNW. This fellow demanded a salute from the the Cpl. who steadfastly refused to pay him compliments higher than his rank deserved. Finally, he was persuaded to consult a manual, where to his chagrin he found the corporal was correct. I only heard about this second hand, but apparently the captain's face was turning several shades of red during this time. It was very entertaining- so I was told.

Yours in the Cause,
Mark Terry
