Stroke leaves FPJ in a coma

Fernando Poe Jr., a movie icon who came close to unseating Gloria Macapagal Arroyo as President, fell into a coma on Sunday after suffering a stroke.

Poe was taken to the Saint Luke’s Medical Center after suffering a stroke at a party with his staffers at his film studio on Del Monte Avenue in Quezon City.

“He’s critically ill, he’s in coma and still under observation,” Dr. Anastacio Aquino, one of the three doctors attending to Poe, told reporters.

Aquino, a neurologist and longtime doctor of Poe family, said the 65-year-old Poe had cerebral thrombosis, or a stroke.

He said it was difficult to say at the moment if Poe’s condition will stabilize or deteriorate.

“We will find out in the next 72 hours if his condition will improve,” Aquino added. “Poe so far would not undergo operation yet.”

An MRI, or the magnetic resonance scan, made by Aquino along with Doctors Tom Aquino and Eduard Cua showed that Poe’s “single” stroke affected several parts of his brain.

A stream of political and movie personalities visited Poe at the Saint Luke’s intensive care unit.

“He is in a comatose condition, so we are asking the people for prayers,” Rep. Francis Escudero, Poe’s campaign spokesman, said. “[Poe] is strong. He will fight to survive.”

Political backers and movie stars were talking to officials at the Christ the King seminary near the hospital about hosting a prayer vigil.

Known to his movie fans as FPJ and “Da King,” Poe parlayed his roles as the strong, silent hero of 200 films into an election campaign that wooed the poor masses but made analysts nervous with little beyond vague plans for the economy.

In the May election Poe came within 3 percent of blocking a new term for Mrs. Arroyo, exploiting the popular appeal that had propelled Joseph Estrada into the presidency, which ended in 2001 with massive street protests.

After the election, the opposition filed scattered charges of fraud as Poe returned to the film world and an unusually private life for an action hero.

Mayor Jejomar Binay of Makati City said Poe was hosting a party for politicians, movie friends and campaign supporters at his film studio on Saturday evening when he felt dizzy and had searing pain in the back of his head.

“Initially, he thought it was only because he changed his eyeglasses but later he could no longer stand his dizziness,” Escudero said. “He did not fall to the ground but his condition was no longer normal so we rushed him to the hospital.”

Poe lost consciousness in the early hours of Sunday.

Escudero dismissed any link between Poe’s ailment and his electoral defeat, saying the actor was telling friends Saturday that he was not bitter but would pursue his protest.

“I think, he will recover,” opposition Sen. Juan Ponce Enrile said of Poe, the opposition’s standard-bearer in the presidential election.

“We need prayers and [the intervention of] the Divine Healer. There’s nothing impossible about His capacity to do anything,” he added.

Fr. Larry Paraon, who officiated Masses in Malacañang when Joseph Estrada was still the President, also led a prayer with Poe’s family led by the movie actress Susan Roces, Poe’s wife.

“We’ve prayed for him,” Paraon, also a friend of the action star, told reporters. “The family was crying because it was unexpected.”

Among the other personalities who visited Poe include former senator Vicente Sotto, Mayor JV Ejercito of San Juan, the former First Lady Imelda Marcos, Rep. Imee Marcos and former President Corazon Aquino.

Friends and supporters of Poe in show business like Armida Siguion-Reyna, Robert Arevalo, Philip Salvador, Richard Gomez, Caridad Sanchez and Janice Jurado also paid a visit.
