Home sweet home. The sun rose over the distant horizon, arrogantly tossing his golden rays over the gently lapping waves. Blues, pinks, and oranges streaked over the sky in a beautiful array of colors. Birds were just beginning to wake, their tiny bodies rested and rejuvenated from their nocturnal slumber. Bursts of song began to erupt from the trees that lined the coastline, serenading the arrival of the grulla mare. Dust had gathered on her grey coat, the specks of grime pasted there by the rainy conditions of The Exodus. Fatigue weighed heavily on every step, her hooves lifted with great effort. She was home again, she could finally relax. Releasing just a bit of the tension that held her muscles practically rigid, Elven attempted to make herself at home. Relinquishing even the tiniest bit of control proved to be a grave error. The events of the past few weeks bore down on her with the ferocity of a tsunami, brutally slamming into her bruised heart with devasting effects. She had subjugated herself at the altar of humility and had journeyed in search of him, even after the rumors she'd heard concerning his indiscretion. She'd confronted him in his home, anxious to learn the truth behind his departure. Most importantly, she'd been turned away; not with words, merely with actions alone. He'd shunned her. It was a hard lesson, one that Elven had thought she'd learned years ago. Never, EVER let your guard down, never FEEL. In the end, it only hurt you. She'd fooled herself into thinking that with him, it would be alright to lose a fraction of the stoicism, to slowly tear down the walls around her heart. Now she was paying the price. Humiliated and hurt, she came crawling back to the only place that had ever sheltered her. Hastily attempting to erect some sort of shield against that agony that ripped at her heart, Elven lifted her chin in stubborn defiance. She would get through this, she'd survive. The question was: why? What was she living for? Why was she struggling to make it through every day? Where was the payoff, the reward? In the end, she was alone as always. A fact of life perhaps? Maybe. Silent and resolute, the dame lost herself in the forest with the hopes of someday finding the steel that had protected her so well in the past.
