"I am a junior referee in Victoria and i was touch judging in a 1st grade match a player was back chatting 20 out from his own line so the referee binned him and the captian who was also back chatting and then the referee advanced the mark to just before the now 11 man team's try line. In another match another referee extended a mark over 50 meteres from one end of the field to another."

Referees who do things like this (ie bend the rules to create proper discipline) should be hailed as heroes !

There should be more of this going on out there in district park footy.

Pity about the spineless , gutlesss mob who we call refereees in the ARL who get treated like dirt and just cop it week after week setting an appalling example to people who play and referee the game at grass roots level.

In the game of cricket there is a pre-amble to the laws of the game called "The spirit of cricket" which outlines the ideals of the game one of which in part says -

The Spirit of the Game involves RESPECT for:

Your opponents
Your own captain
The roles of the umpires
The game's traditional values

It is against the Spirit of the Game:

To dispute an umpire's decision by word, action or gesture

To direct abusive language towards an opponent or umpire

To indulge in cheating or any sharp practice, for instance: To advance towards an umpire in an aggressive manner when appealing

The game of rugby league could learn a lot from cricket and could benefit from a "spirit of the game" document similar to that used in cricket these days.

And you wonder why attendances at ARL games are on the decline in Sydney ? It's not rocket science is it ?
