Subject: Moving off the mark

A penalty that is becoming more frequent in RL, is for the attacking player moving off the mark. It is often when there is too much crowd noise or the referee is does not call held loudly enough. A recent example, is the first penalty against Hazam El Masri in the Bulldogs/ Newcastle match last weekend.

I remember Bill Harrigan getting a player to walk back & play the ball... Sure it slowed the game down but it was a common sense approach, rather than penalising a player for something which the referee was probably a contributing factor.

18 all in the GF with a minute to go, it would be a very tough way to lose.

I believe it is something that should be changed to be the referees judgement, for him to go back & play the ball on the mark. The attacking team, will then have the penalty of losing momentum but retaining the ball, as opposed to losing the ball & being penalised for it at the same time... If the player then does not go back to the mark, a penalty could be given.
