PONTYPOOL have come under fire from neighbours Pontypool United after blaming the Welsh Rugby Union for the demise of their youth team, writes Andy Howell.

Welsh League First Division outfit Pooler had claimed in a statement that the policies of the WRU and its rugby director Terry Cobner had forced them to curtail youth activities.

Cobner denied Pontypool's claims and last night received backing from Pontypool United, who were, until recently, administering and running the under-19 side on behalf of their neighbours.

"Pontypool United administered and ran the side so successfully that after only two seasons the side were promoted to the Premier Division of the Dragons' Trust League for the forthcoming season," said a United spokesperson. "Is Pontypool RFC being totally honest in blaming the WRU and Torfaen borough council for the demise of this side?

"Clubs below the Premier Division do get financial help. The Youth get travelling allowances for their league games and Welsh Youth Cup games, plus a small supplement, so finance cannot be that great when the likes of Talywain, Garndiffaith, Blaenavon and Cwmbran all run youth sides.

"They do not get £80,000 a year from the WRU like Pontypool. Therefore, the financial argument does not hold much water.

"The reason the Youth do not now have facilities is because Pontypool's (benefactor) Bob Jude decided to have the team renamed as Pontypool Youth, dropping the name of United without even informing Pontypool United that they had done this.

"Also the team was now to be based at Pontypool Park.

"This decision effectively took the team away from the facilities they had."

A YOUTH SIDE HAS ALWAYS BEEN WELCOMED AT PONTYPOOL UNITED. IT WOULD BE NICE, AFTER ALL THESE YEARS, IF THERE COULD BE MORE COMMUNICATION BETWEEN THESE TWO CLUBS. YEARS AGO, UNITED WAS ALWAYS THE FEEDER CLUB FOR THE PARK. IT NOW SEEMS THAT THE PREFERRED OPTION WOULD BE TO LOSE OUR LOCAL TALENT TO CLUBS FURTHER AFIELD WHICH I THINK IS A SHAME. THE YOUTH ARE OUR FUTURE - HOW CAN WE ALLOW THIS TO HAPPEN, SO MUCH FOR THE DEVELOPMENT PLANS WHEN WE CANNOT EVEN MANAGE TO FEILD A TEAM WHICH LAST YEAR PLAYED SOME OUTSTANDING RUGBY FOOTBALL. WE SHOULD ALL BE ASHAMED.
[> Subject: You would think grown men from Pontypool RFC, Pontypool Utd RFC, WRU and Torfaen C.B.C. could get together and sort this lot out for the good of youth rugby in Pontypool and rugby in general in the Pontypool area, or am I being to naive in expecting the WRU and Torfaen to care. I believe Pontypool RFC and Pontypool UTD RFC care, perhaps it's not too late for them to reconcile their differences and sort something out, it probably just needs someone to swallow some pride and make the first move..

[> Subject: Further to the above. It would have been nice to see Mr. Cobner taking the opportunity in the Western Mail to express some concern re the demise of youth rugby in Pontypool and promising to do all in his power as Director of Rugby for the WRU to help resolve the situation, rather than to just express surprise at Pontypool's claims and deny them. The fact that he did not express any concern at the situation just about sums up the WRU.

[> Subject: Doesn't Terry Cobner live in Mahmilad (outskirts of Pontypool)??? I'm sure I've seen him out the Star pub on several occasions. Talk about sh!tt!ng on your own door-step. You would think he would care more if he lives within close proximity. Obviously not!

The man comes from Blaenavon born and bred. Pontypool RFC and Ray Prosser put him where he is today. He has done sod all for us apart from watch our decline and almost snigger at it. Any landlord in the area should ban him on a matter of principle as he has completly lost the plot of his roots.

I was always a great admirer of "Cob" but not any more. He does not deserve the respect of anyone who cares about our club.

Maybe the shoddy way he has treated us will come home to him in multiplication.
