I just heard you av signed Jon Williams and Devereux. Both great players. I watched Jonno from the bank the other season-class act, he'l beef up your bacs vand add a bit of pace. Devereux has the experience to take you up, and with Byron and Mark Jones staying, you'l wipe out Aber. Come on the POOLER, we want u in the Premiership next year. That cup match was grea, the atmosphere, the fans-Great!!!!
Good luck POOLER, the EBBW will be cheering you on!!!!!!!!!!

Nothing new then. A certain Newport born, Llanelli player seen out on the town again.

One for the breathalyser test me thinks Mr H. Epitomises everything that is wrong with Welsh rugby. Too many players on £100K + per annum.

Overpaid and unfit.

What do think of Mr Samuel's comments that the finance to the first div is a waste of money. For you who don't know who Mr Samuel's is, he is the man who conrols Bridgend Rfc, who spends lots of money on a player who lasted about 30 minutes against Pontypool in the cup. What a Prat of the highest order. Pontypool has more History and Presige than his club will ever know. Bob Jude carry on the good work, you've got more in your little finger than that man has got in is whole body.

OK in the Argus it says we are close to signing a European Shield Finalist. - Either someone from Sale or Ponty then (and most likely Ponty.)

From the 1 XV that took the field that day I would be very doubtful whether its any of them - most of them went on Wales tour to SA. So it has to be a replacement. Anyone have any ideas?

So at £55 for a field season ticket that's, given 20 home games, £2.75 a game income from each season ticket holder. No wonder they can't afford to pay for any ground improvements or the like. Having gone bust a few years ago you'd think they'd have learnt their lesson.... Hope they pay their rent to the council, lol..

PONTYPOOL last night signed Wales and British Lions international John Devereux - club benefactor Bob Jude describing it as a statement of intent.

Devereux, capped by Wales and Great Britain at rugby league, claimed he was joining a club that had the potential to regain its place at the top of Welsh rugby.

The 36-year-old centre was released by Bridgend at the end of last season - his commitments as a sales executive of a pharmaceutical company preventing his availability for some of their day-time training sessions.

But he does not see his move as a backward step. "Far from it," said Devereux.

"I had offers from a few Premier Division clubs but I am excited by what Bob is attempting to do at Pontypool Park.

"They have the potential to be a big club. There are a sleeping giant but have been stirring and are ready to reawaken.

"If you ask anybody in the rugby world to name famous Welsh clubs Pontypool would be one of the first you would hear.

"It is like Widnes, for whom I played rugby league. They had a spell in the doldrums but people were still talking about them alongside the likes of Leeds and Wigan.

"Pontypool are a First Division club but they have Premier ambitions that are second to none.

"I believe they are the one club who could get promoted and stay there. I want to be part of that promotion drive, playing alongside people like Mark Jones and Byron Hayward."

Some of Bridgend's fans attempted to persuade the Brewery Field's coach Allan Lewis to keep Devereux by launching a petition but he would not relent.

"I feel I could have still offered them something but Allan Lewis made a decision. I have not got a problem with that although I do think players should be encouraged to have part-time jobs outside rugby," said the powerful 21-times union capped centre.

"I worked nearly all the time during my 10 years in rugby league. Jonathan Davies was the same when he was there. Being a full-time rugby player is not the answer - players need to do something else as well."

Jude, who also revealed Pontypool have signed former Ebbw Vale fullback Jonathan Williams from Aber-avon, expressed delight at Devereux

agreeing to join a revolution that saw them knock then reigning Welsh-Scottish League champions Swansea out of the Principality Cup last season and run eventual semi-finalists Ebbw Vale close.

Pooler were denied a place in the promotion play-off after a gruelling campaign by Aberavon's superior try count.

Aberavon lost the play-off to Welsh-Scottish League bottom finishers Caerphilly but, at last month's extraordinary general meeting of the Welsh Rugby Union, it was decided there would be automatic promotion from next season.

"That is what we want and, hope-try-count.

fully, signing John Devereux will help us achieve it," said Jude.

"I tried to sign him last season. He is a typical former rugby league player with the condition of a 29-year-old, not a 36-year-old.

"John is going to be a tremendous asset for Pontypool. We want the best possible squad. We may be in the First Division but we have got a Premier back-line now and a hard-core of players in the spine of the team.

"We are determined to get this club into the Premier Division and stay there. We have the potential - our average crowd last season was the fifth best in Wales and there are a lot of businesses in the Cwmbran area who want to sponsor a top club in Torfaen.

"We have got a friendly arranged against Newport at Pontypool Park on August 3. We are expecting a huge crowd for that and Bath are likely to come here on August 13. It shows the esteem in which those clubs hold Pontypool."

I think todays signings are significant. With more top quality players on board it is clear that we are intent on reclaiming a place in the Premier league.

I don't think we can give enough praise to Mr. Jude for the effort he has put in to building such a quality side.

We have to give him our full backing. As was mentioned in an earlier message, the very least we can do is to buy a season ticket. Ultimately we will only secure preimiership rugby in Pontypool if we all work together. Lets provide our maximum support and patronise Pontypool RFC in whatever way possible.

He now qualifies as a UK resident and lives in Griffithstown. I know this because my son goes to school with his son!

Well let me tell you about a few rumors I've heard over the past couple of weeks on Pooler's latest signings and departures.

Apart from Mikey Powell (Brigend bound)everyone from last year has been offered a contract.

Byron (who signed a 3 year contract last year) has a clause in his contract saying he can leave after 1 year if he is unhappy. He is desperate to play Premier Rugby again!!

So don't be surprised if he rejoins Ebbw, he has been offered to Pontypridd, but they want Neil Jenkins instead!

Jason Strange is unhappy at Newport because lack of 1st team outings and maybe on a dual to Pooler.

John Deveraux is coming to Pooler as backs coach (which is one of the reasons Byron is leaving!)

Richard Field is on his way back to Pooler after being released by Pontypridd.

Lyndon Mustoe is retiring.

Pooer desperate to land signings in the following positions:

1x Loose Head
1x Tight Head
1x 2nd Row
1x Reseve Scrum Half

Contracts will be signed this week for current players and new signings so keep your ears open!

Anybody else heard these rumors?

Methinks its a mistake for Mike Powell to leave Pooler for Bridgend. I know he wants to play at the highest level of welsh rugby but I think he would better himself by staying at Pooler for another season.

(spider-loh-tf014.proxy.aol.com/195.93.50.154)

This is my idea for the future of Welsh Rugby.

1) A 12 team Welsh premier division with no promotion or relegation ( to include the current nine in the premiership, plus Pontypool, Aberavon, and Newbridge).
2) None of the teams in the premiership would receive money from the WRU.
3) Top 200 players in Wales (if we can find that many) contracted to the WRU, which also mean being paid by the WRU aswell and not by their clubs.
4) Those top 200 players will be spread out by the WRU evenly between the 12 clubs, thus like the old days helping to raise the general standard of the game in wales
5) Only two foreign players per team, thus preventing talented welsh youngsters from staying on the bench.
6) Four welsh provinical teams to compete in europe, 3 in the the cup, and one in the shield, again with only two foreign players in each province.
7) Thus welsh players would only get paid for provincial appearences and international appearences.

The result of these dramatic changes would still keep the idea of club rugby in wales: which would be vital, it would also allow our best players to playing together on a regular basis, thus aiding our national side, and finally, and most important of all, it would get rid of the idea of having big financial backers in the welsh club game, as the clubs wouldn't need them, as the players wages would be paid by the WRU and not by them. The rest of the players in the premiership could be paid by their clubs, but to earn the realy big money players would have to gain a WRU contract - thus their is an incentive to play better.

The super six would argue against this, but their way leads to disaster. They only have narrow self interst at heart. nice at it would have been for llanelli to win the cup, but in the grand scheme of things it would not have helped welsh rugby. These super six are between 15 million in debt, and these are the people sir tasker wanted to help run the WRU. The super six are saying that welsh club rugby can only sustain 6 professional club. They are only saying that to earn more money, due to then waisting so much of it already.

Congratulations WRU (and Clive Norling in particular) on slapping a ridiculous fine on Aberavon because their coach had the nerve to criticise a referee. He's not the first coach to do so you know.
Are we to assume then that we'll see sanctions against TV commentators who slate match officials - we even had Jonathan Davies sarcastically awarding Paul Adams a "man of the match" award recently because Davies felt he'd had more influence (negative) on proceedings than any of the players.
It seems that anything the WRU can do to hamper Aberavon's quest for success (success which, incidentally, they've already earned more than once but remains denied) will be done.
Come on WRU. If you want to be respected then level the playing field. There are 239 clubs out there, and ALL deserve the same consideration, not just your favoured few.

Rob I think you are back from your holidays today. Hope you had a good one. There are numerous rumours appearing on here, most of which are negative. Please give us some good news and clarify the position with the following points:

(1) Who is leaving? More specifically, what is the position with Byron, Mikey Powell and Lennie? If they are leaving, why?

(2)Please clarify the Club's position with finances? The last rumours that circulated on here were true. (Two years ago)

(3) What is the position with the redevelopment of the grandstand, executive boxes? (As outlined in Argus some weeks ago).

(4) What is the position re the introduction of a National sponsor? (Again Argus)

(5) Without mentioning names, how many players are we intending to bring in ?

(6) Will there be a question and answer session shortly?

These are all questions that are wishing to know.

Cheers

Pontypool have to go up next season, it maybe our last chance. To do this Steve Jones (despite the fantastic job he has done in most respects) needs to pick his best side available for every game, and stop insisting on giving the lads a run out. Bob Jude also needs to get rid of Ben Jeffries and Chris Laudry. Laundry just hasn't got it, and Jeffries has just had too long to get fit and failed miserably - I suggest he gets a job in Burger King (apparently at the end of each shift the staff get to eat all the left over burgers!!!

I read in the Argus with great interest that Ebbw Vale supports the Tasker Watkins report. In the report it recommends that:
Resolution Four:
The Premier Division should be the only professional division within Wales and no money should be provided by the WRU for payment of players below the Premier Division.
Current payments for this would cease at the end of 2003/2004 season.
Resolution Seven:
Play-offs between the Premier Division and the First Division to sort out relegation and promotion(such as in force this season)should stay.
Resolution Eight:
Teams below the Premier Division should not be contracted
in a professional way buy this should be replaced by registration and transfer rules. To come in by 2004/2005 season.
Thanks Ebbw for supporting these Resolutions you are no better and the big six.

OK we lost yesterday.
Some of you guys will have cheered the news, but I'd like to thank those who offered support over the last couple of weeks.

So now it's down to preparing for next season and I'm already looking forward to our two matches - I live away & travel a lot so miss too many games, but when the fixtures come out I'll be blocking out certain important dates !!!!

If you win the league we'll be behind you to get into the premiership - mainly so that we can follow you up the next year. If we win the league [which I'm sure is going to happen :-)] we'll not make the mistakes which killed us this year and will be waiting for you to follow us up.

Anyway good luck for next season - except when you play the Afan obviously.

My fears were proved right sadly. Caerphilly 49 Aberavon 14.
Although I wished Aberavon well I had a sneaky feeling that they would not win any of the play offs. Methinks Aberavon would have been better off refusing to take part in the play offs and pursuing there greviance with the WRU on being denied promotion last season. I bet the top premier clubs will be delighted at this result as they would see it as strengthening their demands with the WRU. We may well see Aberavon fade a bit after this as this result would be a huge moral shattering blow to them as I'm sure they must have been highly confident a week ago of gaining promotion otherwise I dont think they would have agreed to the play offs. What do other supporters think?

In response to some of the replies to my comments re the play-offs. My suggestion that some Caerphilly players may have been rested for the Aberavon game was contested so if I was mistaken I do apologise.
Secondly I didnt say Caerphilly were a poor side but said that by their results they had a disaster of a season.
In reply to whether the play-offs are fair or not I can respect and appeciate both viewpoints but have to come down in favour of no play offs as (1)I believe it was set up to protect any of the big clubs from finding themselves in an embarrasing position of being relegated. (Although with all due respect I dont think it was meant for clubs like Caerphilly)(2)It is very unfair on a team that has given its all throughout a long season to win the 1st division title and then have their future decided on just two games. As far as Caerphilly is concerned having lost 19 out of 20 league matches in the Premiership one could argue that they havent earned the right to be there for another season. On the other hand Caerphilly could have had the good fortune to have won say 12 matches but still find themselves in a relegation situation then that could add more weight in favour of this this play-off. The reason being that they could be deemed to be to good a side to be relegated to the 1st division and would more than hold their own against lesser teams in the 1st division.

I hope the rumours about Richard Field, Richard Smith and John Devereux are true, they will bring a lot to an already good team. It would be great to see Richard back at Pontypool Park. I'm not to sure about signing Jon Williams though, he cant get on the Avon bench even. Speaking to their supporters and Ebbw supporters no one seems to rate him, not a 'safe' fullback, maybe a medium paced winger though! Hope I'm proved wrong. Good to see we are attracting these players though if the rumours are true.

In all the talk about the play offs I have not heard anyone mention that the team that won the title for Aberavon would not necassarily be the team they would end up with in the premier. Like us they would probably look to strengthen their squad, unlike Caerphilly whose squad was not strong enough hence relegation (or should be). Aberavon are not being given the opportunity to prove they could survive in the premier, which is as ludicrous as the people who are currently making a pigs ear of running the game.

I saw the result on telext..Aberavon 13 - Caerphilly 17. Although I wished Aberavon well I had a sneaky feeling that Caerphilly would win this one. Caerphilly have had a disaster of a season losing 19 out of 20 league matches. However they have known that they were relegation contenders for several months and have had ample time to prepare well for this relegation battle with Aberavon. Charlie Fualkner seems to have done his homework well for Caerphilly. So it doesnt look to promising for Aberavon in the 2nd leg playing away from home. It should never have come to this as Aberavon most probably have worn themselves out to win the 1st division championships whiulst Caerphilly would have most probably been resting some key players ready for this match. It does make a mockery of the system wherby you could have a team lose every match in the Premier and just concentrate on winning two at the end of the season to stay up. I did make a comment on the Aberavon web site the other day suggesting that they would be better off refusing to play in these play-offs on principle and waiting for the outcome of their legal challenge to that promotion fiasco last season. The WRU must take the blame for all this silly nonsence and hopefully we will see some normality brought back into the game before the start of next season.

Says in today's Argus that we have dropped our legal threat and that we will be stuggling to hold on to Lennie and Mike Powell.

Here we go again!!!

Absolutely gutted!

Went to watch this game. It was ok. Aber were winning 13-10 into injury time until Sione scored the winning try. Well done Sione!!!!!!

It was worth going just to see the smile wiped of Dan Hawkins' Face.

It has got to be an uphill struggle for the Wizards, unless they have learnt from the game against Caerphilly.
Had luck Wizards.

I'm fed up of reading messages that constantly criticise and write off our home grown talents such as Ben, Stuart, Joel, etc. They work their guts out for the squad, are proud to play for Ponty, and all they get is abuse from so called supporters. Its about time someone gave them the credit they deserve...well done boys, you've had a great season and hope we get to see more of you at the park next season.

I feel Steve Jones basically admitted he was responsible for our down fall this season in the free press. If he had not had a plan to change the whole side around just after half time we would have convincinly beaten teams, not just sneeked home or even lost. I am all for blooding players, but not all at once. This happened on numerous occassions and was in my opinion why we lost the league in the end. We were by far the best club. I agree with hs comments about clubs not interested in going up butjust want to stay in the league and collect the money from the WRU. How often do you see these clubs off load there players that are on a big wage when their status is safe. The end of the season was a farce in reality. I am not trying to take anything away from Pooler or Aberavon but there s someting wrong when Whitland beat us at the start of the season then we put 80 points on them.
Anyway next season I reckon with squad weended this season with we should walk it because now we have the attitude to do it, that has been missing at the park for a long time. We need to invest though in an outside/full back as back up to Byron. Stuart Lawrence just is not pacey enough. We has have to play the hooker Chris Thomas and ensure Gareth Taylor stays with us.

Having read the comments by Steve Jones in the Free Press I think he is being far to hard on himself. He has done a superb job over the years and as he has said will have learned a lot from this season ready to take the team to even better things next season. Keep up the good work Steve.

Anyone else out there feel that the wru have S**T on us for long enough. Forget all the legal actions regarding the promotion and playoffs. Lets really S**T on them all for a change. Why not do the same as Swansea and Cardiff did a few years ago and decide to withdraw our membership to the WRU and i mean every single club in Wales, (Other than the so called big 6, we don't blody want them anyway) and set up a rival union we can call it what we want for a few months then the WRU would have to fold as the likes of the big six left would never be able to supply enough money for them to survive, we could call ourseves the WRU again. The comitee could be set up professionaly and we would all have the satisfaction of again being part of a real union That cares about its members. After all isn't that what unions are for to look after the members. Then we could buy the Millenium Stadium from the recievers for a pittance sell it for a fortune with its location inthe center of cardiff we'd get millions for it if only as a shopping mall. then build a new purpose built stadia somewhere which can provide parking and entertainment for supporters throughout the Year not just 5 times a year. This isn't just an idle thought we really can do it send this to anyone you can think of involved in any Rugby Club here in Wales and start making things happen.

At the end of the day, despite the great efforts of the boys, we fell just short. A lot of people have cited the Rumney game as being crucial but I feel two other factors were more important.
1. It look us the majority of the season to sort out our line-out. The net effect of this was that we could not get the quick supply of ball that our backs needed to play the game at pace. We all saw the positive impact when the Chris Thomas-Gareth Taylor-Mike Powell combination got established - we had time and space. The lack of decent line-out ball also meant that the opposition got more ball than they should have had, stayed in the game for longer, thus making us edgey, and more crucially led to us conceding more points that we should have done - the factor that undid us in the end. In may games the opposition gained heart from our shambles in the line-out when we should have buried them.

2. The decision to bring the Whitland away game forward to that fateful Friday night. Leading up to that time we were not playing particularly well and had to thank Byron for getting us through. He got injured at Carmarthen and we struggled whilst he was out. We should have not been playing any more games during that period than we had to and should had the guts to admit that at the time he was our key man. If Whitland didn't want the game to clash with Wales v The Barbarians we should have politely said sorry but that's tough. We had our free Saturday the week after the originally scheduled date and that would have been valuable after a win at Whitland before facing Aberavon next.

Congratulations and best wishes to Aberavon, it is important for us that they beat Caerphilly. However I have a feeling that they will not get the decisive home win they might need. The atmosphere at the Talbot Athletic Ground (likely crowd 3000) will be nothing like that which inspired us at the Park against Swansea and Ebbw Vale or that which we would have got against Caerphilly(probably 6000-8000). Likewise they will not have a big following at the away game which will be tough.

If the squad remains with us and our line-out is sorted out we should be looking to lose a maximum of 2 games next season and start the season by dishing out a few 50 point hammerings to state our intentions.

In such a long and very close campaign it is unfortunate that one great club has to lose out. The amateurs that run the WRU haven't a clue how to organize the game. Aberavon should have been promoted last year and Pontypool should be there next year.

You made the rest of Division 1 proud when you dumped Swansea out of the Cup - I only wished we could have done the same to Cardiff.

Pontypool are a great club - hope we are both together in the Premier League very soon - perhaps next season?

Is there any more news up your way about this threat of legal action that could block the playoff between Aberavon and Caerphilly over the next two weekends? Knowing how long these court cases take (with our one from last year not due to be heard until the end of July), I would have guessed that the playoffs would still go ahead with Pooler having to wait a 12 month to go to court over compensation? I sincerely wish you good luck with whatever you decide to do. It be good to play you again next season, but please let that be in the Premier Division and not Division One!

Well, that's it for another season. My boys just couldn't make it to the final hurdle, though not for the want of trying. The butterflies in my stomach have been replaced by an ache in my heart, just as if my rugby lovers had given me the Big E. Still, as with all disappointments in life, we WILL bounce back, and next season we will take no prisoners!!! Well done to Pooler on a magnificent effort in their last few games, and to the faithful who turned up week in, week out, and endured the nail-biting finales as well as enjoying the moments of briliance. Let's hope that all those people who turnrd up for the Swansea and Ebbw games can make a bit moere of an effort come September, and offer Pooler the support they once had, and once again deservre! Congratulations to Aberavon, and commiserations to Dunvant, who have suffered the player drain the rest of us have experienced in the past, and who will, I feel, be a great loss to Division One. So, chins up everyone. We would only have had to pay more for a season ticket anyway!!!
