Subject: But if they didnt have the chance to "opt out"...
In reply to: more 's message, "A dancer that starts at age 23 is going to have a greater range of movement and ability to" on Friday, July 15, 10:38:03am

They wouldn't have to dance with the 15 year olds if they opted in. The reason 15&over is the highest age group is simply because there arent enough people in the competition to divide it.

I also dont think that the difference between a 19 year old, and a 50 year old, is any less great then the difference between the 15 and 50 year old. In the "Adult" category 50 year olds DO compete with 19 year olds. In a properly defined a split age group, as I am suggesting, the 50 year old would not compete against a 14 year old, or a 19 year old. They would compete in 21 and over, or 25 and over, or potentially as high an age group as 50 and over (the more there are, the more they can divide up groups so that people compete against thier peers.)

Getting rid of "Adults" does not lower the age of the competitors "adults" competes with, but raises it. By combining the andovers and the adults together, you create a group that can be divided by age, not by whether or not thier teacher wants them to compete in andovers. Then, the age groups will not overlap (25 year olds in andovers, 19 year olds in adults) and the "adults" will actually dance with people closer to thier age, not further apart.

I have watched competitions where the "15 and over" beginners had 3 or fewer dancers in it. Those 3 ranged from 15, to 27... and the Adult beginner competitions had 15-20 competitors in them, ranging from 19 to 50+. If you combined them, they could be evenly split at either 21 or 25. there would be a handful of 19-20 year old "adults" forced to dance with a 15 year old, and one 27 year old "andover" competing with the "adults".

You shouldnt be able to choose your age group. It should be based on your age, not your choice.

Right now, adults is age ranged 18 to 50+, and andovers ranges from 15, to 30 plus. Combine them and you get 15 to 25, and 25 to 50+. I dont know about you, but I think any 50 year old would rather compete only with people over 25, then with a group that contains more 19 year olds then people over 30.
