How about Take Back Your Block? Get the kids to clean their street, be monitors, give suggestions about the way they'd like their block to be, then help them make the reality?

How about getting the city merchants to pitch in by sponsoring some kind of monthly celebration of the successes? Once a month give a block or street party for the kids. Food and sodas. Maybe get local kids with talent to put on a show.

City Hall could do well by giving an award to the most improved block or street. The awards could be framed and posted in City Hall for everybody to see.

How about the press? A mention of the great efforts of the kids and some coverage wouldn't break them. It might boost sales when the kids want copies of the paper to keep the article or to send to relatives. TV coverage would do the kids good too. They'd see themselves on TV!

A sponsored essay contest. "How I Could Make My Block Better". Or "I Have A Dream, One Block At A Time". Businesses (including realtors here) could donate some tools and materials to help. Merchants could donate funds, services, light refreshments. Maybe a coupon system. A point coupon for every hour the kids spend improving their block. The coupons could be redeemed at local stores (including in the town) for fun stuff for the kids to use for their play on their improved block.

AND EVERY DONATION TO BE RECORDED FOR PUBLIC INFORMATION.

No more "art". Every kid can participate in this and every kid (and adult) benefits. So do the merchants and the city.
