Do you think that churches should have expensive things in them?

Is it OK to have a gold chalice? Should they have stained glass in the windows?

Should churces have only the bare neccessities, like a wooden or glass chalice, and plain glass windows, to save money to give to the poor?

If the church already has those things, should they sell them to help the poor?

How much is too much, when it comes to fancy stuff in churches?

Religious leaders protest the governor's order to crack-down on illegal immigration.

What do you think? Does your religion support illegal immigration? Does illegal immigration compare to slavery--as a legal question the churches should be involbed in, on the side of the illegal immigrant as they were on the side of the slaves?

Is this a question about law? Or is it a question about human need and mercy?

The author was saying that modern churches aren't inspirational (spiritually).

What do you think? What style church do you feel most comfortable in? Does the style make a difference in how you feel during a Mass or service? Is it easier to pray in a traditional building vs a modern one?

I agree with the author. I grew up in a parish that had a modern church building. I hated it! I still prefer traditional church buildings. The cathedrals I've been to are amazing and inspirational, especially The Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in DC. But the church doesn't have to be very old, big, and full of statues, paintings, and stained glass. My parish church is a much simpler brick structure that was built 75 years ago. It has no stained glass, and except for a few elements (the tabernacle, a crucifix, and a few statues), you would think you were in a Protestant church. But it's a traditional building, and so I'm comfortable there.

What about you? What kind of church building do you prefer? Or maybe it makes no difference to you? Have you been to one of the mega churches? If you have, what did you think (of the building, I mean)?

Happy Easter everyone!

I went to the Easter Vigil this year. I didn't know what I was missing. It was a 2-hour Mass, but it felt like no time had passed. Very moving.

There were 3 adults admitted to the Church. They looked so happy, especially the woman.

The Pope also Baptized adults today. One is a well-known, Muslim-born journalist. He had to have a guard for protection. What a wacky world we live in.

Again, I'm sure this find is worthless, but I think it's really neat.

I check the religion section out at a local used book store, and sometimes I find something worthwhile. A few weeks ago, I found a 1965 Jerusalem Bible--new in the box!

Yesterday, I found another autographed book.

Leslie R. Severinghaus wrote "Religions and History", which is meant to be a textbook for public school students, that integrates political history with the history of religions. He had a really interesting life. had an advanced degree from Columbia. Spent time in the orient, and apparently collected quite a few rare texts in his travels. He opened an English language lab while there, too. He was first a teacher, and then a headmaster. He married the sister of Henry Luce, the publishing giant, who married Clare Booth Luce, the Catholic convert who either won or was nominated for an Academy Award for one of her screenplays.

Anyway, that's my latest "find". Have any of you found any treasures lately?

What are you reading? I'm just finishing "The Captured" about kids who were captured by Indians (Native Americans) and then rescued or returned. Their stories are interesting, but ultimately very sad.

How long has it been since you went to Confession? (You don't have to answer that if you don't want, to. :) )

I hardly ever go. Face-to-face doesn't bother me. But the confessional--yikes! :)

Since this is a Catholic forum, I want to make sure that the actual Catholic teaching on the Sabbath is posted. It's OK to debate the Catholic teaching, but the actual Catholic teaching must be shown, so there can be no doubt about the authentic reality of this important Christian truth actually is.

[Sunday- fulfillment of the sabbath

2175 Sunday is expressly distinguished from the sabbath which it follows chronologically every week; for Christians its ceremonial observance replaces that of the sabbath. In Christ's Passover, Sunday fulfills the spiritual truth of the Jewish sabbath and announces man's eternal rest in God. For worship under the Law prepared for the mystery of Christ, and what was done there prefigured some aspects of Christ:107

Those who lived according to the old order of things have come to a new hope, no longer keeping the sabbath, but the Lord's Day, in which our life is blessed by him and by his death.108
2176 The celebration of Sunday observes the moral commandment inscribed by nature in the human heart to render to God an outward, visible, public, and regular worship "as a sign of his universal beneficence to all."109 Sunday worship fulfills the moral command of the Old Covenant, taking up its rhythm and spirit in the weekly celebration of the Creator and Redeemer of his people."]

If we're going to be very picky about words, and changing words, let's look at what "Sabbath" means. No Pope ever changed the Sabbath. Christians today (most of them) celebrate the Lord's Day, the 8th day, just as the earliest Christians did. The popes haven't changed God's word. :)

The earliest Christians were Jewish. The debate over allowing Gentiles to become Christian wasn't about not wanting Gentiles. It was about allowing Gentiles to become Christians without first converting to Judaism. Eventually Paul's view was accepted, and Gentiles could become Christians without becoming Jewish first. And we know that Christianity was eventually a religion in its own right, no longer a Jewish sect.

but since we were recently talking about angels on Catie's forum, I thought I would bring it up again.

Do you beleive in the apparitions of Mary? If you do, do you believe only in those that have been approved by the CC?

I don't believe in any of them, but I'm wondering if those of you who believe you might have been visited by angels (I don't remember if you said you beleive it or that it might have been an angel--don't want to get it wrong :) ), also beleive that Mary also visits people.

There's nothing "wrong" in believing in these visions, and I don't want to come across like I think they're silly. I just don't beleive in them. What about you?

What do you think? I think it makes sense. Since Gabriel didn't tell her that she was already pregnant--Mary had to say Yes first--Mary's saying that she couldn't figure out how it could happen, makes no sense unless she never planned to get pregnant. She was already betrothed, as they say :) , so it's not like the idea of becomming pregnant should have seemed like an odd thing.

Catie, a while back you mentioned that "unquenchable" doesn't mean forever, to you. That's paraphrasing, and I may have got it wrong.

From Matthew -

"And these will go off to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life."

In this passage, eternal means, to me, forever. The righteous will be with God forever. The others will be forever punished.

And then we have the matter of unquenchable fire. We know that the others will suffer eternal punishment, and that punishment is named--unquenchable fire. A fire that can never be satisfied.

Now, I don't believe that there is a real fire. :) But the punishment is eternal, meaning permanent.

Just as the righteous will be with God permanently (eternally), the others will be punished permanently (eternally). There is no relief. So the unquenchable fire (punishment) is one that can never be satisfied. One that will never end, because the punishment (fire) is eternal (forever).

Purgatory, otoh, is about being cleansed as if through a cleansing fire. Again, not a real fire.:) This "fire" isn't eternal. This isn't unquenchable fire. This will be satisfied. There is an end. This isn't eternal. The person will eventually have eternal life with God.

I'm wondering why you think that unquenchable doesn't mean unable to be satisfied, as it does when we say "an unquenchable thirst for knowledge", meaning that there is no end to this person's desire to learn. The desire is eternal. No amount of knowledge will quench that desire.

Have any of you read about the rise of exorcisms in Europe? I read about it only this morning.

I know nothing about exorcisms--I think I'm not even spelling it right--unless you count what Hollywood fabricated in The Exorcist. lol

Do you know anything about it?

Some like to blame the CC for the spread of AIDS in Africa, saying that the Church's teaching on sex and contraception causes the spread of AIDS.

If someone can point to one couple that contracted AIDS through sex while following the Catholic Church's teaching on sex, I'd love to hear about it. :)

I found this quote that I thought was cute.

"Ending AIDS by handing out condoms is like ending murder by handing out bullet-proof vests."

What do you think? Does the Catholic Church's teaching on sex (no premarital sex, no adultery) and contraception (just say no) cause the spread of AIDS?

IMO, it's the people's refusal to follow that teaching that's responsible for the spread of AIDS.
