- Anger is not a sin? -- Joan, 15:25:38 07/20/07 Fri [6] (ip68-0-253-131.ri.ri.cox.net/68.0.253.131)
I've always thought of anger as sinful. It's one of the 7 deadly sins, I think.
"Now the works of the flesh are plain: fornication, impurity, licentiousness, idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, anger, selfishness, dissension, factions, envy, drunkenness, carousing, and the like. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things shall not inherit the Kingdom of God."
What do you think? I thought that removing anger from the ranks of sin was a secular attempt to help people feel better about themselves and what they are doing, feeling, or thinking. I can remember the psychologists on TV shows saying something like, "Thinking bad thoughts isn't a sin." But that's not what I was taught.
What about you? Do you consider anger a sin? Do you think that hoping that bad things happen to someone you don't like is a sin?

I often wondered this question, but was afraid to ask a priest or nun. Jesus founded the Catholic Church, so does that make him a Catholic? Jesus told Peter on this rock you will build my church. Although, Jesus was Jewish, the Jewish people are still waiting for him to come. Jesus had to start his own church with people that believed he came for our salvation. I never heard the Catholic Church refer to Jesus as Catholic. I wonder if that is because the Catholic Church who believes she is the one true church, doesn't want to offend the Orthodox and Protestants by calling Jesus a Catholic.( Start a big controversy ) After all, the Catholic Church is always hoping for the Orthodox and Protestants to return home to the Catholic Church.
As for the Blessed Mother...she has appeared in apparitions asking people to pray the rosary. However, if the Blessed Mother, is Jewish, the Jewish people don't pray rosaries. Is the Blessed Mother, now a Catholic?

Priests drunk on the altar after the Communion Rite. Please. How dumb can you get. But they feel free to post that crap, and Brenda doesn't see a thing wrong with it.
Well, it gives the rest of us who actually know something about Catholicism to publicly refute the anti-Catholic nonsense that so many on the Waltons boards love to post whenever they see an opportunity.

What do you think? Would you rather attend a Latin Mass or a post VII Mass in your native language?
One complaint about he Latin Mass is that it includes prayers for the conversion of the Jews. What do you think? Are the complaints legitimate?
I would rather attend a post VII-style Mass. I like the priest's facing the congregation, that we participate a lot more than in the Latin Mass. Being able to understand every word is a big plus. We could all learn enough Latin to understand the usual phrases and responses. But I'd still rather hear it in English.
I really can't think of a single reason that I would choose a Latin Mass over the Mass as it is now at my church. Hoping that my parish doesn't change.
The Agnus Dei in Latin is really nice, though. So maybe I would get used to the Latin Mass and be able to see what so many people have been talking about for the last few years.
This should make Mel Gibson very happy. Maybe now he'll go back to a real Catholic Church instead of the one he started on his own. :-)

There's a movie about a German Catholic family during WWII. The husband is a soldier who is captured by the Russians and is sent to Siberia. The story follows his attempt to get home to his family.
"As Far as My Feet Will Carry Me" is an excellent movie. I found it at Hollywood Video, so I assume that most video rental places will have it. Netflix probably has it, too.
It's subtitled (a warning for those of you who hate subtitles).
Enjoy!
Joan
PS: It's not a religious movie like The Passion is. It's just about a Catholic family. If you weren't Catholic, you might not notice the Catholic references (Confession, praying for intercession by Mary).
It's a great movie. Oh, it's a true story.

My mom is Eastern Catholic. Priests in the Ukraine have a choice to marry, or to stay single. If they get married they must do so before they are ordained. Also, married priests cannot become a bishop, archbishop, or cardinal. When I was young one of the priests at my mom's church was married and had five children. ( In the USA priests of the Ukrainian Catholic Church cannot marry). The Orthodox and Protestants allow their clergy to get married. They seem to be able to carry out their duties as pastor, husband, and father. Do you think the Catholic Church should allow priests to get married? A very, very, long time ago we had Popes that were married with children.

Apparently there is some controversy about the commandments--some ridicule.
Typical. People don't like to be told that what they do every day is wrong.
I think the 10 commandments make sense, unless you're in NYC, in which case it's no holds barred. :-)
'Drivers' Ten Commandments'
The "Drivers' Ten Commandments," as listed by the document, are:
1. You shall not kill.
2. The road shall be for you a means of communion between people and not of mortal harm.
3. Courtesy, uprightness and prudence will help you deal with unforeseen events.
4. Be charitable and help your neighbor in need, especially victims of accidents.
5. Cars shall not be for you an expression of power and domination, and an occasion of sin.
6. Charitably convince the young and not so young not to drive when they are not in a fitting condition to do so.
7. Support the families of accident victims.
8. Bring guilty motorists and their victims together, at the appropriate time, so that they can undergo the liberating experience of forgiveness.
9. On the road, protect the more vulnerable party.
10. Feel responsible toward others.

This question is for anyone...how often do you go to confession- once a month, once a year as the Catholic Church requires ( Easter Duty )- every so often, not at all?
I attended a Catholic grade and high school. In grade school we were made to go to confession once a month. If you got the mean, old , pastor instead of one of the nice priests, it was a scary experience.
In the Catholic high school that I attended no one forced us to go to confession like they did in grade school. But one day I had a very bad experience while going to confession. That was 24 years ago...that was the last time I ever went.

RE: Giuliani's Abortion Stand... -- Phil from AZ, 08:18:01 06/07/07 Thu [3] (71-223-15-2.phnx.qwest.net/71.223.15.2)
No pro-abortion candidate can seriously expect to win support with the Christian Rt and thus, have a chance to win the Republican nomination. By taking a wishy-washy stand on abortion, Giuliani hopes to trick the Christian Rt by pretending to be against abortion, but supporting it legally. That was a part of the Democratic party's strategy during the Election of 2006.
In the end, this trick will fail. While I have some respect for Giuliani's law and order and fiscal policies while mayor of NYC, I do not support him as a candidate for Pres...nor do I think he will collar the Rep nomination. I don't think I have ever voted for a pro-abortion candidate in the last 25 yrs or so.
Finally, I have a great deal of admiration for the Catholic Church's stand against abortion. I just wish they would follow thru with their threat to ex-communicate Dem politicians who take pro-abortion stands. I wonder what low-lifes like Ted Kennedy and Chris Dodd would do if they faced ex-comm? LoL
Take care, God Bless,
Phil from AZ

Brent, do you have a copy of the Catechism? Thought I would send this along to you in case you don't.
159 Faith and science: "Though faith is above reason, there can never be any real discrepancy between faith and reason. Since the same God who reveals mysteries and infuses faith has bestowed the light of reason on the human mind, God cannot deny himself, nor can truth ever contradict truth." "Consequently, methodical research in all branches of knowledge, provided it is carried out in a truly scientific manner and does not override moral laws, can never conflict with the faith, because the things of the world and the things of faith derive from the same God. The humble and persevering investigator of the secrets of nature is being led, as it were, by the hand of God in spite of himself, for it is God, the conserver of all things, who made them what they are.

Jamestown, VA is celebrating it's 400th birthday this year. It's a beautiful place--we visited last month-- and they do a wonderful job at preserving while marketing it. But it is not the first place that was permanantly settled by non-natives in the U.S.
That title belongs to little-recognized St Augustine FL.
The U.S. mainland was not first settled by Protestant or Puritan Englishmen. It was settled by Catholic Spanish.
Just thought we should remember and celebrate our Cahtolic history in the U.S

I'd be interesting in hearing stories from people who have converted to Catholicism from other faiths. I've been going through this for the past year and will be starting RCIA this fall. I was going to do it last year but it didn't seem like the right time.
As a kid, I usually went to a non-denominational community church (baptized as a Presbyterian) but stopped going in high school. I experimented in college (meaning I looked at other faiths) and ended up as a quasi-agnostic. Elements of Buddhism and Native American religions (especially Black Elk's teachings)are still very appealing to me but I feel most at home in the Catholic Church.
As a biologist/ecologist, one of my biggest stumbling blocks is when I hear christians ridiculing science and evolution. The same goes for scientists who ridicule all forms of faith. To me, this has never been an either/or proposition. I have a feeling that this topic will keep coming up though so I'll just leave it alone for now.
Thanks for starting this forum Joan. I hope everyone will play nicely.
