Subject: Holy shite, woman, you and Tracy sure pull out the heavy questions! I'll answer some right away, others I'll have to think about. Can you smell the smoke? Chap. 61 Q1) I can't say that the lack of democracy surprised me. I would think any Catholic who threw their hat in the ring, or even talked about doing so, would be "persuaded" to withdraw and I'm assuming that the vast majority of Catholics simply didn't vote knowing none of the Protestant politicians would do anything for them. I also assume the majority of the city's civil servants would be Protestants and would therefore block, derail or sabotage any laws that would benefit Catholics or lessen their own privilige. As for the end of corruption, who knows? There will always be some level of corruption in any government, how pervasive it is or whether it's based on sectarian lines I don't know.

  • Chap 61 Q3) I don't think Pat even thought about the danger he was putting himself into, he simply saw a person who needed help and went to do what he could. He, like Casey and Pamela, is simply incapable of watching something wrong happen and doing nothing. Q4) Living in Canada, I often see the differences in how events are reported in Canada and the US. And watching the BBC provides a completely different point-of-view again. Even within Canada, though, it's amazing what gets left out, or presented in a specific way in different papers within the same city. The whole idea that the media is unbiased and impartial is nonsense as even the best reporter brings their own bias to stories and so do the editors and publishers who choose the stories they want to feature, where they are in the paper/broadcast and which quotes they choose.
