Eisenhower's most successful foreign policy action during his reign as President of the United States was when he decided not to get militarily involved with the conflict between the Nationalist forces and the Chinese communists. The Nationalist forces were stationed on Quemoy and Matsu islands, which were close to China's communist People's Republic and the Chinese felt like someone was breathing down their back and might invade them at any minute. The issue became so huge between the two parties that the Nationalists were forced to leave Taiwan in 1949. Then China started bombing the Nationalist party in fear of an invasion. A few years later, the Nationalists decided that it was time to take back the island. At this point, the United States could no longer sit on the sidelines; she thus decided to intervene in this matter. Eisenhower said that if China was going to invade Formosa, where the Nationalists were residing, the United States would take action against China. The United States did want to intervene, but couldn't because, thank God, because the water was too shallow for the naval ships to attack. By deciding not to intervene with the issue between the Chinese and the Nationalists, a possible world war three was prevented. Also, the United States had just gotten out of the Korean war and was having issues with Russia at the time, so getting into another war with China, would be a horrible decision. The decision not to get involved with the Chinese and the Nationalist was probably one of the smartest decisions he made during his presidency. If Eisenhower had decided to get involved with the affair between the two countries, the world as we know it might be foreign to us. If the United States did get involved, the relationship between both countries would have been severed. Also, the Chinese allies would have stopped trading with us, thus making our economy fail even more and also, could become hostile as well.
