The gall bladder regulates the outlet of digestive products of the liver into the intestines to times when it is needed.

You can live well enough without it, but you have to eat more often and in smaller portions as far as I know.

I do not understand well what purpose it had to take out the gall bladder.

Possibly the altered digestion ensures a more even uptake of energy from the digestion during the day and a more frequent bowel movement, which might enhance sport performance.

By the way, what kind of surgery will the son of your friend have; and what was his first big surgery?

I strongly suspect he will get a big endoscopic exam under anesthesia at the camp, if they aim him to be a top athlete. It depends on what aim the boy or the sport club has for him.

Alternatively they perform the exams during the same session as the surgery.
