Author: an ADCRG trying their best
Subject: Absolutely. Does the cheating show a moral bankruptcy and people's true character? Yes. But what caused it is the competition structure.

In figure skating, judges cannot be coaches, and scoring is structured. Does it eliminate all bias and cheating? No. It's a subjective sport, and you can never completely eliminate the subjectivity... But you can make an effort. The recent developments post-scandal like blinding the dancer numbers, sequestering the adjudicators, etc., that's all entirely for show. It has done nothing to improve anything.
I'm a newer judge, and the number of people I meet "on the circuit" who got their ADCRGs clearly just to be able to "play the game" better is astonishing. They have no real interest in judging. It's just something they have to do, in order to make sure their own dancers get a fair look. I thikn sometimes that accounts for the just straight up bad judging you see. They just truly don't care what they're doing. They take a half-hearted attempt at putting numbers on a page, just to tick the box that they did. Some of them even admit they don't enjoy judging... I'm like, well then please stop accepting jobs and leave them to those of us that do!
I will say, I no longer teach... And I get my share of flak for that too. I must not know what I'm doing as a judge, if I'm not producing dancers at a World's level. I disagree. I make a significant effort to keep up with the sport, and am still involved in the running of the organisation, even if not teaching. You do see out-of-touch judging from judges who don't teach and don't pay attention, but that's a choice THEY made, and can't be said of all non-teaching judges. A robust continuing education, or re-qualification system would fix this problem.
As you said, everyone are friends. I have friends. Do I know who my friends' dancers are? Yes, of course I do. This world of ours is the size of a pea. But, do I feel entirely comfortable marking my friends exactly where they deserve, even if it means tanking them if I have to? Yes. The result? I have about three actual friends in the Irish dancing world. Lots of acquaintances, but three actual friends. Because not many people are able to actually accept that from a friend.

So, are there plain rotten people involved in the sport? Yes. Has anything gotten better in the last three years? Probably no. Are there still good people in the sport, trying to do the right thing? Yes, many. Will anything change until the whole competition and scoring structure changes? No.

There is good in CLRG, but the power needs to be given to the right people. Hold your teachers accountable like you would for your MPs, Congressmen, etc. They're the ones casting the votes.
