In reply to: curious teacher thinking about opening a school 's message, "Genuine question - how do dance teachers make enough money not to have a day job ? Especially small schools - what’s the secret to this?" on 27/04/25 20:42:44, Sun

build up your student numbers. You need to work out all costs such as CLRG (or whatever organisation) membership costs, venue hire, insurance and any other business licences that you might need. Factor in your time, not only at class but the many hours you need to put in at home for paperwork, doing taxes, class planning, dealing with parents, chasing people for payments, upkeep of either school website or social media, advertising for students etc. Work out all of these costs and figure out how much you would need to charge each student to not only break even, but make enough for you to survive on as a wage.

You will need a big enough class and if you start with all beginners, most will only want to do 1 class a week. The money comes from the dancers who are competing and doing several classes per week, so it will take quite a while to get dancers to this level.

You probably need to keep your day job for several more years whilst you build up your school to a level that it would bring in enough money on its own.

More money is then made from offering privates, workshops etc where you can charge more to work one on one with students. Our school also did special classes for kids going to Nationals and Worlds, all the extras bring in more money, but again, this is for higher up dancers which you won't have at first unless you take transfers from other schools, which you may or may not get as you are new and don't have a "reputation' of taking dancers to the top if you know what I mean, so this would be unlikely (unless you are already a well known dancer with a winning reputation of course).

It takes a lot of work and many many unpaid hours to get to a point where you are making good money, but every current successful teacher started where you are now, so there's no reason that you can't do the same.
