"You're a shifter aren't you?"
At this he felt a sudden jab at his insides. He thought she would've taken his words as a lame joke, as drunken musings... that sort of thing. Talk about getting to the point. "Maybe." he said with a small grin, hoping to make her doubt whether he was whatever he was. But maybe he had sort of given himself away, but then again, he couldn't remember doing anything that would suggest he was something other than human, either. He felt very modest about it- vampires and werewolves were generally the ones taking the limelight, the ones people were frightened or cautious of. While with shifters... alright, so, you could turn into a dog whenever you wanted. Big deal. Although he was obviously somewhat reluctant to let people find out that he was indeed not entirely human, because he knew there were a few people out there who would give an arm and a leg to see the lot of them dead, dangerous or not. "Say for argument's sake your hypothesis is correct, would that put me under arrest?" a small laugh. Hypothesis? He hadn't used that word since high school in a science test. Nerd. He remembered Midori telling him she was a "special" sort of agent, but never actually told him precisly what she'd meant by that, except that it had something to do with the whole non human creature thing.
"Max, darling, I'm sorry. I'm in a rare form tonight. You were a huge help tonight Max. We both know what could and would of happened if you had not been there. You were an answer to prayer, a knight in shining armour. Thank you....thank you so much."
Wow, ok. So maybe he didn't know how to take a compliment. He listened to her words feeling embarassed, his eyes glancing down at the smooth, delicate hand resting on his arm. His mind scurried around frantically inside his head, tripping over furniture while looking for an appropriate reply, but failed to find one. Max usually failed at finding anything, for that matter. "Yah, well, I do my best." He was still convinced otherwise, but he couldn't think of anything else to say, and he couldn't exactly spend the next couple of hours trying to come up with something. He felt Midori scoot closer to him and smiled inwardly. Yes alright, it felt good, he admitted that, and right now was fighting the urge to put an arm around her shoulders and hug her closer, but he was scared it would be a bit weird or uncalled for, or something.
