Subject: Getting my head around balance positions

I wanted to go through all my players and drill down on exactly what position they play. I have to say, it is not an easy task.

So for starters, let me clarify, a Mid Def or Mid Fwd can not play in the Ruck Rover or Rover positions but can play the position Centre?

Another coach suggested that he was told that Mid Def/Fwd couldn't play in the Centre spot.

Mid FWD 5 positions, Mid Def 5 positions, Mids 5 positions.

D2 4 positions, F2 4 Positions. KF 4 Positions, KD 4 Positions. Rucks, 3 positions.

UNLESS another position is tagged. Ie Ruck, with a KF tag, which makes the Ruck take the amount of positions a KF does, and adds it to the original position, IE Ruck KF = 3 + 4 = 7 Positions.

Or 1 of 4 positions on the bench. So technically a player can have from 7 positions to 11 positions.

That is what the Rules page suggests. Just wanted that clarified.

So one thing I found, when I went through Heat maps. If I go on my laptop, go into the Stats Pro on AFL, they still have last years players on there.

They also are inaccurate. I looked up Jeremy Howe, who is always in defense, but his heatmap said 51%/49%. So too did Tom Hawkins, Mitch Robinson, Ollie Florent, Lachie Weller. So this can't be used. They give you the FULL season 2020 but quite quickly into the new year, this changes.

Get on to the mobile, and they have each individual rounds heatmaps on the AFL App. This is misleading to get a gauge on where a player is getting used, as a player may just have the one round in defense, and then back to the forward line the next match.

No season thus far heat maps as far as I could tell. Maybe there is some way to get to that, but I couldn't find it.

If I could get a running total of heatmap for the season thus far, that would be a great tool for us.

Once a player passes 55% in a half of the ground, they could then be used as a mid Fwd or Mid Def in light of that information. Like the 3 HO Ruck Rule.

But one thing I will say, it is too fluid. You can't lock those positions for a half a year, because it is not realistic.

I think we go back to updating our OWN balance sheet, and if the opposition have complaint about it, they can look up the info we set to be the info to go to, and if they have a case, bring it up.

I think the balance rules are important, but the landscape changes that much, it is hard to lock coaches out of running those changes through their sides as the season goes on.

I looked into Rebound 50's stats, Inside 50's stats. Perhaps this can be a key indicator. What ever the stat or tool like heat maps, I think we need to give the power back to the coaches, and trust them to do the right thing.

We already have a system of trust. I can play a player out of what my Balance sheet says, and no one would notice. Of course if it is obvious, it might be picked up, but if not, then I can get away with that. In fact, it leads coaches into a false sense of security, that the opposition for any given week is in fact doing the right thing.

If I played a side this week, and I will use the example discussed with another coach. This coach thought of Ollie Florent as a Mid Fwd. He has been in the past. However, if you go into the past three weeks heat maps on the AFL app he has been defensive 67%, 74% and 69%. An average of 70% over three weeks. Perhaps that task is how we qualify our players in positions. If the average in the last 3 games is over 55% the player is then eligible to play Mid Def in this case. So this coach, looks that up to try to find a reason a penalty could be added to a team for not following balance rules. If his research turns up nothing, like in this case, play on. If he finds that say I played Ollie Florent in Mid Fwd, and he is 70% defensive, then mods can be informed, and penalty be given.

I don't think a team that is all over the moving landscape of ones side, should be penalised because a locked Balance sheet and a Mods inability to spend time changing things around all the time, should be a factor in this competition.

Perhaps say Florent was 55% - 60% Defensive, and I play him forward, a 10 point penalty applies. If he is 60% - 65% Defensive, 20 point Penalty. And if he was 60 - 65% Defensive, a 30 point penalty Applies and 65% - 70% 40 points, 75% - 80% 50 points.

If a Player is between 50-55% he can play Midfield ONLY.

D2's, KPD and F2's and KPF's could be under the same or similar system. If a player hasn't went near the Forward line for a while, they shouldn't really be played there.

I think three games might be a bit tight. That was why I was desperate to have a running updated heatmap. That would make it so easy to check at any time. 5-10-15 games is a better indicator than 3 matches.

It may appear that I am making things harder on coaches to stay on top of balance, and that might be true, depending on the tools we use. But people are very annoyed that Balance sheets are locked, and the changing landscape makes the rules on Balance not realistic, which is one thing I wish to make it go back to. As REALISTIC as we can to the AFL proper.
