Almost every doctor visit ended with my bottom bared for the nurse's needle. I grew up during the tail end of the penicillin era, although I think I was normally given amphicillin. If I was not there because I was sick, it was for the express purpose of getting a booster shot, or for my frequent migraines as a teenager. All of my shots were given in the bottom, so it was never even a question of where it would go. Today certain shots are still given in the bottom, but if they can be given in the arm I think they usually will be. They also give children shots in the thigh now instead of the butt. So the bottom is kind of like the last option; if it absolutely has to be used, it will be. When I was growing up it was seemingly the preferred method to give it in the buttocks. I think people, and especially kids, are much more concerned about protecting privacy now than back in the 40s and 50s. I suspect it started to change in the 70s-80s. Still, I had an experience at a clinic set up for hepatitis shots in the early-90s where hundreds of people lined up for shots in the buttocks, and there was no question at all about where the shot was going. Older teens and adults of same sex were seen in semi-private rooms, 4 to 6 at a time. I was pretty shocked when I figured out what was going on, but no one complained about the set up. People did complain about the shot itself, which was pretty huge, and tough for even a good number of adults to handle. [ Post a Reply to This Message ]
