How Miss USA has faired at Miss Universe historically. Since 1970 (55 years), here is USA's record: 5 wins 20 additional Top 5 placements, for 25 Top 5 finishes 20 additional Top 10 placements, for 45 Top 10 finishes 10 not in Top 10 at all So when Miss USA makes the Top 10, she then makes the Top 5 56% of the time (25 out of 45). I like to do my own scoring, and have made a little project out of it with so many old pageants on Youtube in recent years. Of the 45 years since 1970 where Miss USA made the Top 10, I think she deserved the Top 5 29 times and the crown 6 times (4 of them: 1980 Shawn Weatherly, 1986 Christy Fichtner, 1987 Michelle Royer, 2004 Shandi Finnessey)... so Miss USA actually does better in my own personal rankings then she does in the real pageant. And while I am an American, I can assure you I am not especially patriotic in a way that would skew the results :) With all that being said, what Miss USAs do you think were over-scored vs. under-scored? OVER-SCORED: I had 1978 Judi Andersen and 1982 Terri Utley dead-last of their Top 10s, but both made the Top 5. Judi even made it all the way to 1RU. UNDER-SCORED: There were 2 Miss USAs who I thought deserved the crown out of their Top 10s, and yet didn't make even the Top 5. Those were 1988 Courtney Gibbs and 2021 Elle Smith. There are some Miss USAs who made the first cut, but who did not make the Top 10, hence the discrepancy. In addition to the four you've named, there is a 5th who missed the first cut entirely - 2010 Rima Fakih. Then there are 5 others who made the initial cut but not the Top 10: 2003 Susie Castillo, 2011 Alyssa Campanella, 2018 Sarah Rose Summers, 2020 Asya Branch, and 2023 Noelia Voight. Julie Hayek is stunningly gorgeous but I think her 1RU placement was correct - for me, 1983 was all about Switzerland's Lolita Morena. Kansas was more pretty than Shauntay in 2002 but again, Shauntay fit the USA mold. 2002 was extremely competitive and I don't recall any blondes making the cut. Whole Kansas was pretty I'm not sure the outcome would have been different. Tina is an embarrassment because Paula could used her powere to make her place and didn't. Oklahoma was a Trump prototype and likely would have placed top 5 in 2010 universe. If I recall, Rima is the first and only Miss USA to not place as the host representative. However, when Deborah won Miss USA as Miss Virginia, she succeeded Wendy Dascomb, who also represented Virginia. At the time it was the first back-to-back year for any state to win Miss USA. However it would happen again with Illinois in 1973-74, and then of course the amazing five-year string for Texas from 1985-1989. I did however come around by the time of Miss Universe; and B) a few years later at Miss Virginia (MAO), I did not even put Kylene Barker in my top five. Of course it was obvious that she was drop dead gorgeous with an awesome swimsuit body, but those were the days of powerhouse singers and pianists, so I thought her talent did not measure up.
