Author: R'dan
Subject: ...

R'dan had never had an excellent sense of direction. Navigating through dense tropical forests was certainly not his area of expertise. But the Weyr was nearby, and he knew he needed to find it. At least he'd have no trouble when he got there - he had family there. Two cousins who he could not remember - T'gan and Akema. Even if he didn't know them, having relatives in the Weyr might make things easier, right?

At first, the teen had been trying very hard not to disturb the natural 'beauty' of the forest. This seemed easy when he first started to wade through the foliage, but as it got thicker, it became more and more difficult for even R'dan to move. He was frustrated. Normally, his light build and small height made it easy for him to manuever pretty much anywhere, but the jungle proved a challenge for even him to make his way through. He couldn't allow that.

So R'dan unsheathed the short sword that his father had given to him when he set out. He was only a novice, and his swordmanship was average at best, but he was improving steadily. He was now confidently hacking his way through the forest. It was easier like that. Imagining every branch and vine that he could not evade was some fearsome creature, he'd cut them away with his blade. It was easy enough...at first.

He was nearing the Weyr. He was sure of that. But he was also sure there was no way to cut that out of his way. In front of him he saw a gigantic, moss-covered log. It must have been one of the biggest trees in the jungle, and R'dan didn't want to think of how it had been knocked over. He could think of only one solution - climb over it. He'd always been agile, which was good for climbing. He'd be able to do it easily.

There was a thick, green vine sloped over the tree trunk, draping on to the ground. R'dan grabbed it and started using it as a rope to climb up. He was small, and he told himself it would hold his weight. Just a little further, and he'd be on the top, where he could just jump down. Unless he fell.

He wondered how he looked hanging there, if anyone could see him. Looking back, though, he had no intention of jumping down...
