Mama is big on whuppins, telling us we are never too old for it. She was brought up that way by her pastor dad and rules the fatherless house my sister and I grew up in. It seems to me that most black mothers do spank and are not afraid to advertise it. My mother says she had to be tough with us, because we have to act BETTER than white kids --our lives depend on it! I am Jewish, the product of a Jewish mother and Catholic father. Although not unheard of, Jewish culture stands out for its hesitation to use spanking. Also in general Jewish children are better behaved, and better students, than children from other groups. I consider myself anti-spanking, but (like my mother) if I someday have children and behavior makes it necessary, after having exhausted other means, I will spank. Although there is no strict ban on spanking, they tend to take the approach of modern parenting and see these instructions in the Torah as figurative.
