There was a boy who watched my siblings and I when he was in college and our parents did give him permission to spank.

I remember him being one of our nicer babysitters because he seemed to give us a lot of warnings and only punished us if we did something really bad.

He spanked me twice, as the first was for repeatedly refusing to go to bed and threatening my brother for telling on me. The second involved kicking a boy in the balls after church and I remember him seeming more upset about that one.

I know that he also spanked my older sister once (and my younger brother twice) but I remember him watching us pretty regularly for a few years.

I'm pretty sure that I was 10 for that one. Definitely not one of my better moments and I can't really disagree that the spanking was deserved.

I remember it as one of the longer car rides of my life because he told me right away that I would be getting spanked when we got home and I realized pretty quickly that I had really crossed a line.

I can appreciate the argument against trying to teach non-violence by using corporal punishment. However, I remember getting a spanking at home for fighting at school, and I wasn't so philosophical about it. I went from thinking I was powerful to the maximum in vulnerability, and there may be times in life where some humility is the answer.

Actually any kind of punishment involves treatment which would otherwise be unacceptable. I suppose this is why many modern "experts" now preach no punishment at all, ever.The timeout is out!
