I was worried more about a demotion.
What always impressed me about your participation in a forum that featured a young man, who posted as PJ or Paterson James, was how you kept a balanced attitude. By that I mean, thinking that spankings were very unpleasant but nonetheless beneficial for promoting maturing and choices better for you and your parents.
Spankings can clearly modify behavior and diminish the likelihood of repetition. Anti persons confidently assert that they are never "necessary" and that there is always a better choice. I am inclined to your view that there are occasions when a physical intervention may be required, even a matter of survival safety. With very young children, this is obvious.
Things get more complicated as kids age. Like you, I suspect that your Aunt is a spanko and that she played a big role in your Mom's decision to return to spanking. There is a general view, allegedly confirmed by multiple animal studies, that punishment must be firm, certain, and swift.
In making her decision your Mom certainly chose a method that conforms to the theory. That it was recommended frequently by her sister-in-law is surely not coincidental. Nonetheless, I think it is far from established that with human children, spanking only works if "it really, really hurts." In fact, most of what is called "spanking" now is not firm and it probably works just as well as the much firmer ones of years gone by.
