A bedroom inspection is Mum's deadliest weapon, because it is almost certain to provide evidence that a spanking is deserved. That's why, if Jack was on a good run and seeing himself as a good boy, I would give him a warning if I was about to clean his bedroom. You've never seen a boy shoot upstairs so quickly! Equally, if I had the feeling that there was a spanking coming soon, then I would make an unannounced inspection to gather the evidence to justify it.

Mary said once that when we spank for bedroom and bathroom issues we are doing so on behalf of future wives and girlfriends, and that is so true. There came a time, I think Jack was 10, when I decided that I was not going to tolerate him leaving dirty underpants on the floor for me to pick up any more. I was not having my lovely little boy growing up thinking that was an acceptable way to treat women.

I had him down at bedtime in pyjamas and bare feet, and announced that from no on there would be no warnings and no excuses. He would be spanked every time it happened. Oh the wide eyes and unconscious clutching of his bottom!

It took quite a series of spankings - and ones of increasing thoroughness at that - but I cured him of the habit. I was also free with my praise when he was a good boy about it, which we don't often talk about, but it's important too. Jack's reward, when he moved, was that he could have his friends up in his attic bedroom because he wasn't afraid for them to see it.
