I repeat my views that for younger kids, a spanking is intended to provide a sting in the bottom that deters future misbehavior. For older kids, it’s that — plus. The “plus” involves being taken down a peg or two with a “you’re never too old message.” There can be several distinguishing features that make this happen. The childish over the knee position, especially if a parent is seated on a chair and the teens legs are waving in the air. The message is also better delivered if it’s skirts up/panties down or pants at the ankles. I think this sort of “good old fashioned spanking” is far more effective than any more painful strapping with a belt, which seems unnecessarily brutal. That a mom could bring a teen to kick and cry with just her hand would be an especially effective message. I knew a family that sparked the younger (under 8- years old) of their six kids frequently, using one of those “cute little deer” novelty paddles. But the whole neighborhood talked about the time their 15 year old daughter got it with that paddle.
