Yes! My girls definitely get a kick out of seeing their soles darken through the day – they say it’s like a little map of everywhere they’ve been. At the end of a busy summer afternoon, they’ll compare the different shades and smudges like they’re reading a story written on their feet.
In winter, we’ve found a couple of tricks that make the cold more manageable without taking away that barefoot feel. Leggings and leg warmers help keep the chill off their legs, and for the coldest days they have a sort of cloth-topped barefoot sandal – it covers the top of the foot while leaving the sole completely bare. It’s enough to take the edge off when there’s frost, but still gives them that direct connection to the ground.
Honestly, I think the key is just keeping bare feet as the norm year-round. That way their feet never lose that adaptability, and the seasons become less about “switching modes” and more about adding little adjustments here and there. It’s amazing how quickly the body learns to work with whatever nature throws at it.
