It has been an unusually warm october with summery temperatures until yesterday and all the kids happily spending their days in shorts and T-shirts. Now a cold front with rain is ending this period, for the expected lower temperatures I have knit legwarmers of soft wool for all three children, with elastic on top and a snug cuff around the ankle, suiting their sizes and preferences.
My 11 year old daughter got them in brick red, long enough to reach from thigh to ankle. She can combine them with shorts or short skirts when it's not so cold and wear them under long pants into winter.
She has grown her toenails slightly longer, filed them nicely and painted them in bright orange toenail polish. She says walking barefoot is part of her style and identity and would like to keep it up as long as she can bear it. Her feet are slim but with nicely splayed toes, shaped "roman" so the first and second toe on each foot are the same length, her soles smooth and leathery where they touch the ground. When going out she loves to have "city soles" as she calls it, keeping her feet neat and clean except for the bottoms of her toes, balls and heels blackened from city dirt, standing out against her pale arches. From what I read in this forum she's not alone among girls of her age with this preference.
For my 13 year old son I made night blue legwarmers reaching from knee to ankle. He is growing steadily, so he has certainly outgrown all his shoes, his feet are strong and muscular shaped almost like an adult man's, with high arches. As he says his feet are good for everything so he won't need any shoes for fall and winter. We will see.
The younger son (9 years old) got his legwarmers in a cheerful green. He has cute little child feet still but is no less capable than his siblings when it comes to climbing, hiking difficult terrains or walking all day in a busy, dirty big city. He really enjoys his barefoot activities and I can imagine him going on until it snows, maybe even then.
I'm glad and proud of all my children's abilities and their confidence, though I also warned them of the dangers of feet going numb in freezing temperatures, toes going pale and catching frostbite on their tips. Fortunately we're still long away from such risks. It's the first year all three of them are eager to go barefoot into winter, I certainly support them all. It's so practical not having to wait for them to find their shoes when leaving the house, not having to keep track of everybody's foot sizes, not having to wash lots of dirty socks, dry and sort them for every child.
I'm now putting on my sneakers and coat, taking my barefoot children to town where they'll certainly love showing off their new legwarmers and find opportunities to rustle their naked toes in fallen leaves!
